Driving home last night I was fascinated by a number of things - which hardly every happens when I'm driving in to work!
The Met office is part of the Ministry of Defence - I probably did know this but it had slipped my mind...like so many things these days.

The Met office want to call March 1st the First Day of Spring whereas Sir Nicholas Winterton wishes it to remain March 21st to coincide with the venereal equinox. Quite fascinating discussion which resulted in me driving past our lane end - so absorbed was I. Anyway apparently the Met office think that working the months into a 3 month grouping is a much simpler way of organising the seasons - and then we wonder why we have climate change! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Well here in the tropical south it registered -3 on my thermometer at breakfast, so it ain't spring yet by my [/] definition. It must be just above the freezing point of nitrogen up in the glens this morning, seen any polar bears this year?

Minus 8 here in Drumclog this morning, clear blue sky, bright sun, gorgeous. I think I see the tips of some daffs sticking themselves up for a wee look to see if the Met office are correct.

Well,

I quite like Summer to stretch on into September and not end August31st.
Oh dear ! I rather think that confirms my suspicions that there are
a)no windows at Bracknell.
and b) they really need a job to keep them busy!
Next they will be advocating a shiny new time and date system for us all to tie in with the weather modelling, whereby what we know as the shortest day of the year,December21 henceforth becomes Da Da..The 1st of January/first day of Winter.

Good to know we are safe on the roads when you are driving. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Anyway the lawn's frozen and there's 8" of snow on the fell tops. Can't be spring yet.

Hi Claymore
If yesterday was the first day of Spring I not looking forward to next winter. I don't know if you know the Meon Valley road which runs north from Fareham. We use it to get to the boat. Spring has started when the thorn bushes that line it suddenly look a bit green at last. I will let you know
when it happens.

Of course it's Spring. The snowdrops have been out in Afton Glen for a couple of weeks and I had the sails up on Sunday. Daffs and croci have even dared to show their heads in Clydebankgrad.
Mind you it was baltic on the shore last night when I went down for some star spotting. I increased the tally of lighthouses visible from the beach to six, it was so clear.

Ghosts ...

a)no windows at Bracknell.

youse cracked it. there's a ghost issuing forecasts and he/she no verra pleased aboot being left behind efter they moved to exter so issues cack forecasts ........

Re: Ghosts ...

"a)no windows at Bracknell."

Very true. Last time I passed that way the big yellow machines were busy knocking the place down.

The Met Office, that is, not the entire town. Although, thinking about it, erasing Bracknell, lock, stock and mock pubs would be a champion ruse.

And how long does it last? (discussion in pub, last night)

We eventually agrees that spring starts with the vernal equinox, but we reckoned that Spring and Autumn last for two months apiece, whilst Summer and Winter last for four months each.

So Spring is March 22 - May 22

Summer is May 22 - September 22 (autumnal equinox)

Autumn is September 22 - November 22

Winter is November 22 - March 22,

Why the Met Office want equal three month periods, we could not imagine. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A pox sir, I say ! on proposals to move the venereal equinox

That shows just how little you know me then. Venereal I wrote and venereal I meant. I almost wrote the Venerable Sir Nicholas Winterton but felt that was going a bit far
there's no prizes around here for spotting the obscure - you need to go with it and develop a play on the words otherwise people think you're just a smartypants. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It sure isn't Spring around Kilwinning. This morn in my driveway it was Minus 7 at 0730hrs and minus 3 this evening at 1830hrs .
