Hi peeps,

Need to give the boat a really good clean up for the season. Anyone know of a good product for;-

- Cleaning the swim platform and mottled areas of the grp. Dirt gets in here and it's a nightmare to clean, I've tried the "active" scouring type powder stuff, no good

- Rug backing for the central mat in the boat has started to cause a real mess, black dust everywhere from the cracked rubber backing...I've heard you can buy some sort of replacement rubber paint stuff you can paint onto the back of weaved rugs/carpets?

- Engine bay, what best to clean in here?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Have a look at this post Cillit Bang much favoured. Saw it on offer today in Sainsburys too.
We use a cheeaper cream called "Astonish" that works well too. Just cleaned our bilges and used washing up liquid and hot water which seemed to get the oil dissolved quite well. Don't know about the mats though. Maybe time for a new set?

Got to get back to the Rugby!

Ref. back of carpet.
How about brush on painty stuff used to make your inflatable look posh again.
Dries very fast.sticks like whatsit to a blanket, remains flexable when dry and water proof. Pongs a bit when applying ,available in assorted colours but mainly every possible shade of light grey.

swim platform. a hand scrubbing brush and a tub of Astonish (£1) oven cleaner. Dont worry, you can also use it for cleaning hands ! You can use it for cleaning any gel, but it does strip all wax/polish off, so you ll need to build it up again. Well, maybe not on the swim platform, but if you use it anywhere else.
Engine bay is hopefully pretty clean anyway? I just use an old fashioned rap head floor mop and a bucket of floor cleaner/Flash
Havent got any carpet, so cant help on that one!

where to get it?Hmm in slightly odd shops, it seems! When I come across it, I buy several tubs, and then dont buy it for years!Maybe Wilkinsons. or ironmongers. Its a blue and white plastic tub about the 2/3 rds the size of a large yoghurt pot!

You can get "Astonish" from most cheapo household goods shop - e.g. Home Bargains etc. We haven't tried the oven cleaner but use the cream cleaner about £1 Very effective.

Ref the Astonish stuff, we swear by it, get the clear spray one for upholstry and carpets its amazing! in fact I only ever use this stuff for 95% of the cleaning jobs and the swim platform is like new after it!

If it's grubby and oily, try 'Bilgex' from 'Cuprinol' smells of pine and it's concentrated washing up liquid type detergent, most people here abouts swear by it.

You can see it HERE

Found something, Plastidip. BRILLIANT! Scraped off thed dry patches on the back of the carpet...plastered on one coat...dried in 1 hr...superb! Another coat tomorrow and I have a carpet with good as new backing. So, for anyone else, rotting rubber backing on your boat carpets? PLASTIDIP!
