A search on spreaders gives lots of info on replacing, tension, fabricating etc but my dinghy mast has not got any. There are no marks, holes etc on the mast to indicate there have ever been any fitted. So, do I need them? The mast is 7.50m high. The shrouds and trapeze are connected to a fitting 5 metres from the base.

No not necessarily needed. The spreaders improve (increase ) the angle of the shroud to the mast the larger angle giving more sideways support to the mast at that point.
Spreaders will also tend to support the middle of the mast where they are mounted in the sideways direction. (or push forward as well if they are angled back.)
If the mast is short and inherently stiff from large dimensions or wall thickness then not necessary. If is all a question of mast and rigging design. So smaller dinghies don't have spreaders. If your mast has not crumpled and collapsed it is obviously OK. Given that the max load on rigging is that which will heel (capsize) the hull you need only have concerns if you have inordinate weight on the gunwhale in a blow. good luck olewill

Thanks for that Will, shes not exactly small at 5.25 metres, but the mast shows no signs of stress. Am hopefully putting her in the water for the first time next weekend but as sails are old will be taking it easy

I wish you much luck and joy with your new boat. Success at first will depend very much on the wind strength. So pick your weather for light winds. (and take a paddle)
Old sails provided they are not weaked by age will generally stretch. This makes the sails have excess camber which is what you want for light winds. olewill
