I previously had sewn on leather boots which look neat but don't allow easy access to check the fitting underneath. When the rigging was replaced I took the opportunity to fit new 'soft plastic' boots. It's easy to remove them each winter and check underneath. Depending on the size of the boat and of your pocket, a cheap alternative is the old 'Tennis Ball Solution'; they are often available for free from most tennis club. They might not be to everybody's taste but they do work.
