Hi All,

Does anyone have any direct/indirect experience of sprayhood makers in the Orwell area? Sail and Cover in Woolverstone and Dolphin-Sails have been suggested to me. Anyone have any good or bad experiences of these two suppliers?

thanks

You see, there is always a balance, I wouldn't have Dolphin anywhere near my boat ever again, but others have had good experiences.

How about Mussetts of Mersea, no one seems to object to them?

Dophin did both our sails and canvas (sprayhood & binnacle cover).
Paul went out of his way to do a very good job. He listened to what I wanted and produced exactly that.
The Dolphin price is not exactly bargain basement but their quality is top notch.
After sales service is second to none.

No connection - just a satisfied customer.

I too would have hesitations about Sail & Cover. There's no real need for the supplier to be local as long as they have the appropriate patterns. Perhaps consider Tecsew, who have a huge database of sprayhoods, and supply hoods for lots of new boats.

I am not sure why the hesitation about Sail and Cover? They have made new sprayhood and dodgers for us several years ago and they are still looking good. Other work also which were are happy with, they may however not be the cheapest around?

Had a new sprayhood (canvas only) fitted last year together with new spray dodgers and mainsail cover. The sprayhood design was quite radically redesigned by Paul to suit my thoughts and works really well. So far all seems well with the new gear but it's only a year old and longevity is an important criteria when judging these things IMO.

Likewise had new Sprayhood made by Dolphin last year and radically altered its shape, old one supplied by Beneteau was too ugly and after 4 years was a right mess.

New spray hood looks great, I had the windows made of strata glass which is very clear, however it does not like being folded, so if you fold regularly I wouldn't recommend using it.

Yes it was expensive but you get what you pay for.

Sail and cover have looked after my canvas work and repaired/replaced as necessary and I have always found them to give excellent service.

Dolphin seem to have done a good job generally and davidwf's looks good.

You don't say what boat it is for. C&J hold a lot of patterns and I would also speak to Tom at Sailmedic just over the Orwell bridge.

I've used sail and cover for a repair restitch on our well tired Sprayhood and they did a good job at a very good price... I then subsequently had them do a new binnacle cover also well done at a good price, and a new stac pack for the mainsail as well... All very good.

We have found Sail and Cover to be great, they have been efficient and innovative tailoring to our requirements. We had bought a load of material from C+J for DIY projects and then went to their stand at SIBs. They have templates for most designs and had the Sigma on catalogue. A suitable deal was done on the last day and hours of the show and it is being made as I type. Delivery in the next few weeks for installation. They have incorporated lots of additional elements for the basic price ie side panels the fold back to allow primary winches to be accessed etc.
Can't wait to get it on the boat.
Darren is our contact at C+J, Sarah at S+C.
