The clear panels on my sprayhood are going milky and becoming difficult to see through. Is there any alternative to having them replaced? Does any firm specialise in replacing these panels?
Make sure you get the heavy duty stuff for boat windows #P7 - I think. Pointnorth also supply a leaflet on DIY(you'll also need double-sided adhesive tape). Can usually be done on a domestic sewing maching. Pointnotyh are very helpful if you call them.
The Milky parts will get hard and crack ... eventually breaking up into shards .... like mine did ....
I took opportunity to give sprayhood to Mountifields on Hayling Island for a make-over ! came back in like new condition, new clear panels, re-inforcement strips where boom rubbed, re-stitched and clean as the day it was first made .... £150 all in .... >>
I was told by the sailmaker not to clean them with detergent, just plain water. Mine lasted, always exposed, a bit cloudy but still acceptable after ten years.
If you replace them, you must allow for the fact that the clear plastic shrinks over the years, and you cannot cut the old ones out and use them as a template.
We tried to buy the plastic and sew them in ourselves, but could not. Luckily, when ours were made, the sailmaker kept patterns of the original panels , and that worked fine.
jeanne - the secret is to lay the new plastic over the original, using double sided adhesive tape, stitch it on and then remove the old plastic and stitch a 2nd row of stitches. Works well - I did mine 2 years ago without any major problems. The Pointnorth leaflet describes it, but do read it several times to make sure you fully understand the method.
