My partner and I are considering a weeks cruising on the Broads with our Bayliner 1952 Cuddy. Does anyone have any experience of sports boats on the Broads with regards to mooring problems on tidal areas etc. Also general info ie Short term river registrations req, secure parking/launching facilities etc.

Depending on where you plan to cruise on the Broads, the tidal areas (near Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft etc ) can fall and rise between 5 or 10 feet ! so keep an eye on your lines.
A Broads authority toll is required, and you have to register your boat with them, short term toll is around £20 or £30 for a week, better off to get a years toll for around £70 for a boat your size !
Secure parking can be found at the many boat yards all over the broads.
There is a nice slipway at Brundall bay marina, cost around £10 to slip the boat, or £600 to moor there for the year.
Regards
James

Hi & welcome
There are plenty of places to launch a trail boat, however, for petrol you are limited on the river to Brooms at Brundall, the Waveney River Centre at Burgh St. Peter and Martham Boatyard. £0.92 per litre.
However, Marina Keys at Gt.Yarmouth , has a petrol station behind, where currently it is £0.72 per litre.
Rise & Fall is greatest at Gt. Yarmouth. Rivers Bure & Yare can run at 7 knots at Gt. Yarmouth and Reedham respectively.
You can run all the way into the middle of Norwich or alternatively reach the limits of navigation at Geldeston or Coltishall.
The only place you can open up the boat is at Breyden Water which comes under the control of Gt.Yarmouth Port Authority. Other than that the Max limit is 6 MPH on the rivers to as low as 3 MPH.
Low bridges are at Beccles – 6’6”, Potter Heigham – 6’8” but narrow also, Thorpe Railway bridges – 6’0”, all at mean high water.
Slips at Brundall, Beccles & others.
Geldeston Locks at southern navigation limit is nice with public moorings and good £10 steak night on Fridays. Thurne Dyke is nice as is the Thurne Lion Pub. Reedham has public moorings and HM. River runs fast. 3 pubs one with moorings. Berney Arms at the head Breydon Water. Different. Do not stray outside the markers at Breydon Water. Plenty do and run aground as it is very shallow and completely dries. River Thurne is very nice as is the River Ant. I should be running up there on the weekend of 5/6th July.
Coldham Hall on the Yare near Brundall is nice. A mean Steak & Ale Pie at the Waveney Pub in Oulton Broad. Landlord is Paul James and a friend of mine. Also a fervent Arsenal supporter. Good moorings at Oulton Broad and a Yacht Station.. Serious power boat racing on Thursdays
Gt.Yarmouth Yacht Station has just been revamped but very busy with hire boats. Norwich Yacht Station has also just undergone a revamp. Moor there as far away from the bridge as possible as there is a lot of noise from nearby nightclubs at weekends. Practically in the middle of Norwich and the Cathedral is worth a visit. Good shopping. Plenty of other places to stop, drink & eat. Worth a visit. Have fun.

George

See if you can get a copy of the mag Norfolk Afloat, as it has loads of good info in it. Get all the info about Tolls, etc. here. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.arweb.co.uk/argallery/h00>http://www.arweb.co.uk/argallery/h00

Yep. Bit of a long standing tradition now. Incidently, are you down on the boat on week beginning 14th? We will be visiting the Eden Project, Fowey, Helford, Falmouth & others that week, only by car unfortunately.

Arthur Ransome

Probably sounds crazy, but I suggest you read "Coot Club" by Ransome. Of course, it's out of date in all sorts of ways and a lot has changed, and it's a kid's book (sort of). However, it gives you a real feel for the Broads and, because it describes a cruise from Horning to Beccles and most points in between, can even give you some practical help in terms of planning the trip. There's a particularly good description of getting through Yarmouth in an engineless sailing boat.

Also of interest because it shows that, even in the 1930's, raggies and stinkies were at loggerheads!

No. It's quicker from Plymouth to Falmouth or Helford by boat. Norfolk takes a little longer!!

I remember the trips along Breydon Water from 25 times on a hire boat. We always made sure we took the pliers and adjust the throttle to full open. The early petrol ones used to go like stink! Left Tutts and her mate driving once. They missed a turning and put all forty feet in a field. The cows were not amused......../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
