Split Pin Advice Please

I need to replace quite a few of the split pins around the deck. I have been searching ebay for stainless pins as I thought it would be worth picking up a pack of assorted sizes. When I have purchased stainless items before I have always gone for 316 grade. The only ones I can see on ebay are 335 grade - will these be OK? Thanks....

That's an interesting one and I don't know the answer. 335 is not a recognised grade of stainless steel within the 300 series. There is an AM 335 material http://www.steelforge.com/stainless-steel-am-335/ that sounds too expensive for the application, although no doubt excellent for it. There is an ASTM standard A335 http://www.astm.org/Standards/A335.htm but that covers a wide range of compositions and strengths. I suspect the Ebay seller does not really know what he has but for the money it seems worth buying for such a good assortment. Will probably be sufficiently corrosion resistant for most purposes.

As far as I can make out 335 is used to make pipes, so why somebody should make split pins with it I don't know. I would stick with 316 it's marine grade.

AH yes thanks 335 qty...Dooh! Not "clearly" though"!

However the consensus seems to be that one cannot get 316 grade pins?

If you leave out the word 'assorted' from your search you will find many sellers offering assortments at a much better price. They are mostly A2.

If these are for guardrail and any lower rigging clevis pins then have you thought about using double turn split rings, these don't leave such sharp ends to tear sails, trousers and fingers on.

Have you thought of using stainless key rings, I have seen these used a lot and of course they don't rip your hands or foulies.
