Spitbank Fort opening at Easter

Hi,

I have just spent a day at Confex and picked up a brochure on Spitbank Fort which is opening for private events from this Easter.

It brought back great memories of our time in the solent so thought it might interest others too.

They have a 'departure lounge' at Royal Clarence Marina and offer the choice of 'ribs' or 'a more sedate option' for getting to the fort...

Inside they have made 9 bedrooms sleeping 18 guests and 9 event spaces including 3 private dining rooms, wine cellar, open-air hot pool, 3 bars including Laurent Perrier champagne bar, sauna, sun deck and games room.

Owned by the man who started 'Dreams' so they tell me.

Sorry if this is old news, but I found it interesting and I'm definitely going to try to secure a site visit! :D

Indeed.

I went once with a group from the Institution of Civil Engineers. Our visit included a guided tour ..... and a nice afternoon tea.

It was then owned by the person who must have been the first who tried to do something with it .

Access was bad, bordering on dangerous, I seem to remember, at least it was as LWS but it looks as though that has now been improved.
 
In my early boating days I was crew on the Jenny boats. We used to go to the fort couple of times a day. To moor up I would go up on bow, (bit scary on those particular boats), put the bowline through a ring on the fort wall, take a turn and the skipper would then backup to the platform whilst I slipped the line or bit it as required.

A hair raising thing in even a slight swell as I would be looking down at a gap filed with old wooden spikes, holding on to the roof rail with one hand and bowline in the other. About 20 years ago now.

No doubt the dock has been rebuilt :)

Ireckon it must be about that when I went!

Our trouble was that we were to be picked up late afternoon or early evening in order to get to Hornet SC where we had an evening dinner for the whole group booked. The time we needed to be picked up corresponded to a low LWS and the boat was well below the landing platform!

We all made it safely!
