Years ago we used to fly a spinnaker with a jib and two halyard winches (ie no extra spinnaker ones). Can't remember exactly how we did it. Any pointers to diagram for four winch handling? Boat at the time only had one central winch in cockpit and two halyard winches.

Spinnacker set up

This is a bit of a strange question.
A spinnacker will need a sheet and a brace (guy) both on winches when flying. The usual arrangement is to use the jib sheet winches or dedicated spin winches. On a smaller boat the jib can be transfered to just a cleat because by the time you fly the spin you do not need a lot of jib sheet tension.
It may be possible to use a halyard winch for either sheet or brace (guy) but this would be dependent on getting a suitable path for the rope via a turning block. Indeed the new versions of my own little boat now only have halyard winches. The jib sheets will go up to the halyard winches so they can be used as jib sheet winches. I don't think I like it much and I guess that is for cost saving.
I guess in your case just give it a try in benign conditions, it will soon become obvious how or if it can be done. good luck olewill

Guy goes to jib sheet winch, sheet is taken on the halyard winches is the normal way of things.

Ah, of course. You need to use the winch not being used to raise the spinnaker. My memory is rubbish.

Not sure if I should use that technique or just buy two more winches for a cruising boat.

You shouldn't need to use a winch to raise a spinnaker. All you will be doing is raising the weight of the spinnaker.
