How do you calculate it?

Spec sheet for a Jeanneau 43DS says 1291 sq ft.

I was advised 51' x 27'

If I took a square it would be 1377 sq ft but say 70% that is only 963sq ft.

"I" dim of mast is 51' 8"

Is this to work out the size of an existing sail - or to work out size for a new one. If the latter, ask your proposed sailmaker?

That's about 89 m2, which sounds plausible for a 43DS. Our 35ft Sunrise has a 67m2 gennaker, and another standard spinnaker of un -known but similar dimensions. 89m2 is a LOT of sail...:)

No trying to compare size of spinnaker on spec sheet of boat = 1291 sq ft and how you then get that if the luff is 51' and foot is 27'.

I think the luff and foot are about right for "I" of mast so suspect the area Jeanneau give on spec sheet is wrong! eg if spinmnaker was a triangle its 0.5 x 51 x 27 = 688.5sq ft. If a rectangle its 1377sq ft which 1291 sq ft represents a multiplication factor of 0.93 which is a huge belly!!

Just trying to understand where either my maths, spec sheet or understanding of spinnaker shape is wrong. Perhaps at mid height width is nearer 40' or more and it carries its width considerably to the top!

That sounds tiny for a 43ft boat. My 44ft boat carries a 157m2 spinnaker as standard

I'm my Dehler 39 the biggest kite, an asym, is 119 sq m.
