Spinlock Lume-On

I've fitted them to my life jackets this year when I did my life jacket checks. They really show up well in the dark. Only thing was I couldn't see any service life date on them. I guess I'll just change them when I replace the normal lights.

Note in the blurb. Ideal to use in addition to solas strobe light. So not approved by any authorities where a light is required. Might as well buy a solas strobe light. olewill

I would recommend these are used in addition to a normal strobe, not as a replacement, but they do make a lifejacket much easier to see at night because the whole of the bladder gets illuminated, so it's a bigger target. Also they are cheap enough to fit as a back up, I had a normal lifejacket light fail well within its replacement time, so having a secondary light gives more reassurance.

Fitted them on all ours, along with Duncan Wells' Livesavers. Hope never to use them but they are there in the event.

Thanks all—that was much the impression I had gained. I made the mistake of purchasing a couple of otherwise good lifejackets last year without inbuilt strobe, so am looking around for alternatives, but will consider fitting these in addition—I had noted the recommendation, though my use is non-commercial and not racing, so SOLAS endorsement not legally required, but I can see the case for approval on so crucial a fitting.

My initial concern was the possibility of battery leakage damaging the bladder (as in the life-raft thread currently on here), but given the higher frequency of LJ repacks it's probably less likely to be an issue.

Happy to believe reference to recent PBO test, but does anyone have any experience of http://www.force4.co.uk/department/...sl-surface-lifejacket-light.html#.V2ZhUVdKPVo as a primary strobe? The lifejackets are Crewsaver and have a special attachment point for these (of course!) and don't seem ludicrously expensive or worryingly cheap, so they are the obvious choice, but if anyone has any horror stories on them, I'd rather hear them now.

The battery in the lume-on is a coin cell and it is encapsulated with resin, so leakage should not be an issue. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the Force4 lights you mention.

Spinlock have an iffy reputation with lights, both from the reliability and customer service points of view. Quite a few people avoid Spinlock for this reason.

In fact there was a recent thread on the number of failing lights.

I had a Spinlock pylon light which failed it's test with eighteen months of theoretical life left. I called Spinlock and they sent me a replacement FOC. While I wasn't happy about the light failing, I cannot fault Spinlocks response. I note the replacement Pylon light has been redesigned, so perhaps there was a design flaw in the original. Out of curiosity I took the faulty Pylon light apart, and it looks nothing like the Lume On. Interestingly replacing the battery in the Pylon light would be easy for anyone with any soldering skills.
