... I had made a ball (actually a small ocean mat drawn tight to form a sphere) but even a simple diamond knot would do ...

This thread reminded me that I need a permanent stopper knot part way down a single 16mm line, it needs to be rounded rather than than a figure-8. I'm sure I've managed to make a rather nice ball by adding extra twists to a figure-8, but I can't find any references to such a knot.

I like the Ashley stopper. Is this any good for you?

Can't tell if insert has worked but simply Google Ashley stopper knot. I'm not keen on the animated knots method of tying but there are other ways easily found.

A knot in 16mm line will make a huge 'ball'. Does it need to be so large?

An alternative could be working a Turk's head around the 16mm line at the appropriate location. Result would be both functional and decorative but would not decrease any of the strength in the main line. Use thinner line, say 6mm, possibly 8mm. Tucking the ends under the strands of the main line would hold the 'stopper' firmly in place.

Perhaps I should explain what this is for. I've bought some line (coloured yellow, so it's easy to find). I will put a small eye in one end, then thread the other end through to make a mooring lasso. I don't want it to tighten on itself, so want a stopper in the loop.

The alternative it just to make a large eye, but it wouldn't stay round.

I believe what you are describing is a stevedores knot. I use this in preference to an ordinary figure of eight as I prefer the shape for handling and it is less inclined to loosen up, although can always be undone...

Found it - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevedore_knot
