Walking up the Fossedyke yesterday near Burton Waters when this red speedboat with "Fletcher" in big white letters came past.I would estimate he was doing 25-30 kts! No wonder theres little wild life on the canal.

If you check out the nests you will notice that all birds build them above the water line, well above the water line or tucked deep inside a reed bed.

Watching a nest while wash passes is very interesting and one has to assume the nesting birds have evolved to cope with lake/flood water waves over many thousands of years and well before wash was an issue.

I believe the lack in river side life is due to three main reasons.....

Epidemic of rats 2 twos ago.

Heavy rain water during the nesting season causing high river levels which will flood a nest out.


When its a cold wet summer there arent as many toddlers throwing bread in.


(I'm not suggesting the clot in the fletcher was right , just not blaming him on lack of duck eggs).
