There was a lot of comment in July last year on the forum regarding the tragic accident near St Mawes where a young man was killed.

The following news item appeared in the local paper yesterday. Photos published at the time showed much damage to the starboard side of the dory with the steering console having twisted to face aft.

Speedboat death - man appears in court

A MAN who allegedly drove a speedboat which collided with another vessel in Cornish waters, killing one person and seriously injuring two, appeared before West Cornwall Magistrates in Truro yesterday.

Philip Colver, aged 30, of St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, faces six charges relating to a late-night boating accident on July 16 at the mouth of the River Percuil. He was behind the wheel of the 19ft Sea Ray Express Cruiser Carrie-Kate, which is alleged to have gone over the top of the 12ft open dory carrying Benjamin Cochrane, 31.

Mr Cochrane, of St Mawes on the Roseland Peninsula, was killed. His brother Frazer and friend Chay Richardson, who were also on board, suffered cuts and bruises. Mr Colver and three other people who were in the speedboat were not injured.

Mr Colver faces charges of failing to carry out duties as the ship's master, being in charge of a ship but failing to keep a lookout, failing to alter his course, and driving at excess speed, as well as two of failing to exhibit lights.

Magistrates referred the case as their powers only allow a fine if Mr Colver, who has yet to enter a plea, is convicted. There is still to be an inquest into Mr Cochrane's death.

Mr Colver was given unconditional bail and will appear before magistrates again on March 24.
