Speed Log paddle wheel

In the hull of the boat I'm restoring there is a paddle wheel for a speed log. The log unit itself is now u/s and destined for the bin but the wheel spins freely. Does anyone know if there is a way to test whether the paddle wheel transducer is operational or not whilst the boat is out of the water and without having a log display unit attached? No point in spending 25 quid if the thing works!

What have you tried so far ?
Have you put a meter across the connections ?
How do you know the log unit is u/s ?

The LCD screen is broken. The unit may be working, but there's no display to tell you what it's saying!
