I have a Airmar speed impeller mounted though hull. The mounting tube has flap valve inside which should close to restrict water flow when the impeller is removed to be replaced with the blanking plug (and vice versa). Except last time it didn't, and rather than getting a litre of water in the bilges I ended up with more like 5 litres.

Anyone have an idea about how to get the flap valve unstuck, while the boat is in the water, without half-sinking?

Cheers,

I have to say that mine has never sealed completely! I find a find if I just reinsert the impeller to jab the flap to remind it of its duty, it comes unstuck. But then it didn't have a major jam. The mechanism is pretty crude and unsubstantial so I would do too much to it.

Ahh! The revenge of the bagpiper strikes at last!

Seriously, get rid of the flappy thing, I've never found they stop much water comong in, indeed they slow down the re-insertion process (!).

Should one pull the impeller out slowly or quickly?
I read somewhere that if it's pulled out slowly it gives the flap time to seal but that never seems to work for me!

In out,
In out,
Shake the water out of your boot,
Do the Raymarine, as you turn the boat,
That's what it's all about!

Sorry it doesn't scan.

Pull out as sharply and quickly as you can! It scared the hell out of me when I first removed the impeller because I removed it too slowly which stopped the valve from snapping shut with the force of the water.

Now I yank it out with gusto, jam the bung in straightaway and seldom use more than a small hand towel to mop up.

As others say, it ain't perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than nothing!!!

And there was me thinking you had a traditional yot and could dry out against a wall with impunity . . .

Seriously, Premier offer a bargain at the end of this month and Southsea ask only £75 to lift 'n wash you ( £115 over 9.5m LOA.)

Slip 'em a beer to dally in the slings long enough for you to sort the plumbing - but sadly, those seals always were pretty ineffective at the best of times.
