I've posted this on the HR Owners site, but seeing as it doesnt get a great deal of traffic thought I'd just see if anyone here has experience of replacing holding tank valves on an HR31?

Mine has seized and needs replacing but access to it looks nigh on impossible without removing the whole tank. Is this right or have I missed something obvious?

If anyone han any experience of this unsavoury piece of maintenance and can pass on any tips I'd be more than grateful!

Many thanks

Mark

mark,
why not photograph the offending item, e-mail it, and talk it through with someone like Lee Sanitation?
I found them very helpful at LIBS this year.

After all, HR are not known for their unique Swedish crafted Bog valves, are they? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Done it on a 352...

I've done it on a 352 - actually I managed to free up the valve, rather than replacing it. If you fill and empty the holding tank several times first (just with seawater obviously!), you'll find that there's very little unpleasantness involved. The tank was relatively easy to remove, and I took it home to work on. The valve unscrewed fairly easily too, and soaking it in kettle descaler enabled me to clean it up and free it.

Re: Done it on a 352...

That's reassuring to hear!

Unfortunately, I have to replace the valve as the splines on the handle bit are now completely smooth and don't grip / operate the valve at all.

As luck would have it, this happened when the tank was closed and as we don't have a deck pump out, the only way I can think to flush the tank through before removing it is via the air vent - presumably this should work... famous last words!

Incidentally, Vickie at HR parts reckons I could replace the valve with the tank in situ, but from what I can see I'd either have to be the size of a hamster or a world class contortionist to do that!

Cheers

Can't you put a wrench on the shaft and open the valve? If the valve is now closed, you can't flush the tank.

Re: Done it on a 352...

No, unfortunately not. The male part of the valve - the bit that sticks through the heads bulkhead with a handle on - is the bit wots been stripped so there's nothing to get hold of.
