Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

As promised: a East Coast Is This You?

Many thanks to uploaders. If you do see your boat here, try to get a message back to the uploader, either here on the forum or with the site's own "comment" feature. You don't need to register to leave a comment, just click on the link in the boat's entry.

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

I does seem to be, thanks to all the uploaders.

Now I want to encourage folks who find their boat on the site to use the "comment" feature to close the loop with something like "thanks: that's me!"

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

Thanks jomo. I have lots of space on my new server but I get a little bit worried about unwitting downloaders on slow lines... Perhaps everyone has 2Mb adsl nowadays.

When I get round to it I will do something different with files over about 1M: the thumbnail will download a (say) 1042x768 70% quality jpg - about 3-400k and there will be another link in the entry to get the full size file, with a "this is a big file - are you sure" dialog. (Perhaps using ftp, which is a bit more efficient)

While I am on about the site... how can we bring it to the attention of people who's boats may be there? I have no idea of the "claim ratio", i.e. how many boats are "found", but I suspect it is quite low.

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

I've no proof, but I imagine the claim ratio will be higher than you think. There are a large number of 'viewers' (of which I am usually a member) on these forums, and a few major contributers (from whom I gain a good deal of knowledge). I expect the claim ratio will be similar.
I think your promotion of the site has been effective without being over the top - and then risking annoying some of the err more volatile of the forumites;)
As for finding out what the claim ratio might be, how about one of those forum polls ?
I think I'll fade back into my normal role of browser rather than contibuter now !

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

Thanks for input M and J. I am really trying hard not to get in anyone's face on the forum. I do the "Is this you" every couple of weeks or so and hope that the tag "Is this you" in the subject has become familiar enough now so those who want to look can and those who don't want to don't stumble into it.

YM have said they will do a story on it and I have sent them some material. It's getting to the stage where I feel some responsibility to the uploaders to do the right thing with the material they have gone to some effort to provide, and get it some exposure.

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

Dumped another load on you shmoo!!

Keep up the good work, when can we have multiple uploading? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

I think you are worrying unduly....

Its a site that is clearly for the benefit of the community...

I can't see you getting any complaints from anyone even with more 'noise'

I personally think its a fab idea... and one well worth promoting harder...

In that case... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

How about breaking the site up per area (Solent, East Coast, Scotland,...)
Site's getting big now.

Would make searching easier - lots of boats posted with no name.

Just an idea

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

Break up per area.
I am lining up a student/slave to do this.

I have the UKHO chart regional classification in mind because its known and nicely hierarchal. Something like England: East Coast: Approaches to River Orwell. That would be three fields, getting smaller and more detailed and could be prepopulated into menus on the upload page.

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

Shmoo

Keep it nice and easy to use, saw a flyer for another site called "thatsmyboat" at Ipswich. Tried the site and found it very slow and difficult to use so won't bother again. (Mostly Solent based)
I notice that some of the pictures now have comments on them or rather " are you human - checking for spambots" is this you checking or an automatic thingy? Wasn't sure what to do?
Keep up the good work.

Also (big hint) will someone take a picture of my bloody boat!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

yeh, yeh, yeh... mine too!

The comment thingy shows a couple of words, all squirly wherly like, and you have to type them in. The idea is that human people can see what the words are and type the right ones in but robots can't (well not without expending disproportionate computer power). The words have no significance and are not recorded or shown anywhere. If the two you get shown are too hard to read there is a refresh button to get a couple more.

Its to stop getting comments being posted by robots inviting readers to chemically enhance their body parts. It wasn't needed on the picture upload since robots have not figured out how to post pictures, yet.

(edit)
Yes - simple is best. I am trying to consult on the design and only take it forward slowly.

Are you both coming to the BBQ @ The Rocks this weekend.
A sail past Photo session could be organised for the Saturday afternoon.
Anyone who is attending will have to be in the river by 12:00 anyway so we may as well do something useful.
Or we could just empty bottles /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

Nor I Dougie /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif maybe we should arrange a mini gathering further North /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

Great! Just found my boat there plus several friends. I will put a link on the ETAP Owners Association site in the next day or so.

Re: Special East Coast \"Is this you?\"

That is super! Its what I set the site up for: to see owners united with pictures of their boats. A link would be great. There must be lots of "unfound" boats on the site and a link would bring in a whole new set of owners.
