Although I actually prefer peace and quiet on the boat I am under some pressure from the crew to fit a car type radio / cd player. I have identified a suitable spot for the radio but I am having a problem locating suitable speakers as I don’t want to cut great holes in the woodwork to fit them. That only seems to leave stand alone speakers that I can tuck into various corners although they would need to be fairly small. I have looked around the internet but cannot find anything suitable. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Your local car parts shop and Halfords will usually have speakers of this type. I have a pair that are designed to sit on a rear shelf, they are oval, about 8 inches long by five wide, containing three speakers each. They used to be on the forecabin shelf but now removed as of no further use.

Having said that, my opinion is that listening to music on tinny little speakers is painful. I have a pair of concentric 8 inch woofers and small tweeters set into two bulkheads with custom turned backs. They look good and sound great.

I use Kef Egg speakers and, whilst a bit big, the sound is the dogs danglys. You could try small sattellite speakers with a sub woofer hidden somewhere ... not particularly de rigeur, but Bose come to mind.

You can use just one speaker. Just connect one set of speaker wires and insulate the unused ones. You will need to use the radio or CD player on mono mode. Stereo is fine if you are correctly located between the speakers but this is an unusual situation on a boat.
But most people use 2 speakers anyway.
Large speakers are better for sensitivity and for wide frequency range although smaller can be OK. The best arrangement is to cut a hole in a cupboard front or bulkhead but as you said you don't want to cut big holes. good luck olewill

You're about to throw out one or more analogue TVs. Take the speakers out first, they will be good for the job, and are designed not to have a horrible magnetic field which may stuff the compass. (TV speakers can distort the picture if they have high external magnetic fields) We have two in the wheelhouse bolted to the fiberglass which gives a great sound and two in the saloon one up a wall the other under a seat - anywhere is good. Main thing is to get the whole boat vibrating....!
