Yes, an ex-Samurai GM 6.5. Having just been rebuilt we started it today and it sounds superb with that nice V8 burble. Started easily and ran without any smoke from the exhaust. Just got to put it in the boat now. I'll keep you posted.

We'll have to see! At least no one can blame Samurai this time.
It's only pushing out about 170hp so won't be over stressed.
And yes, through transom exhausts.

When you say only pushing out 170 hp........Turbocharged or NA? If it is turbocharged that is fine as you have 18:1 pistons, 170 hp NA really stretches the envelope.

Have you fitted lube oil cooler?

Do you have Stanadyne DB2 from 6.2 or proper DB4?

In the past had two excursions into 6.5's happy to share my experiences.

Just the standard NA. Oil cooler fitted. It's the pump that was on it so don't know how to tell which is which. Internally the engine showed very little signs of use with virtually no bore wear and the camshaft pump lobe was also not worn. The engine runs using the standard lift pump. Any tips on what to look out for would be useful.

Most 6.5's imported by Samurai came in with DS4 quasi electronic fuel pump. Engines were up-fitted with mechanical DB2 pump from previous 6.2 engine. Issue was that turbocharging and over-fueling DB2 would never give the claimed 250 hp. Later 6.5 engines for non emissions certified applications used more capable DB4 fuel pump.

Being IDI motor, cylinder head was subject to high level of thermal stress and never coped well. In order to tame the cylinder head cracking in later life a high flow water pump was introduced which is worthwhile upgrade.

6.5's I have tested have nasty hollow torque curve due to the way pump shops have simply over-fueled, the oversquare bore stroke ratio may also add to lacklustre feel of the engine.

Good that you have lube oil cooler, but make sure you fit a lube oil temperature gauge with sensor in the pan.
