There was a story going about that the authorities poisoned most of the stray cats on Meganissi, which at the time was over-run with them. The fairly predictable result was that the rat population exploded.

I have spoken to a few owners who say they have seen rats jump ship and swim to anchor chains on other boats.

Can you moor on 'mr pain in the bum' pontoons, and is the lekkie and water still on.

We was on the harbour wall , we could still get water but no ele , althought there is a way round that , plenty of lamppost , not saying any thing else
On the other side the pontoon where still afloat just about , two yacht have been left on the quay with no one to look after them , we didn't check for water that end

I would have thought that with the onset of winter and now the lack of easy food must make those yachts a sitting target.

First of all, it is normally the locals that poison cats, and dogs in the winter. The tourists insist on feeding both in the summer, with no thought as to how they will manage when they have gone! the Greeks do not believe in the sterilisation of animals, hence the strays. The rats away from the seafront survive quite well, they climb the trees for figs, olives, almonds and also eat crickets and grasshoppers, they have no shortage of natural food. the feral cats that survive are true predators, I have seen beautiful 15 inch long green lizards perfectly filleted by a cat, also rats the same, you would swear their stomach had been filleted with a knife, they (the cats) are eating to survive, perfectly naturally, the beech Martins do the same.
unfortunately not everyone clears up their food. bags and bins it, the same selfish boaters discharge their holding tanks within half a mile of the the shore, it can be plainly seen from the roads.

Davy I am a shame to I have to agree with you , some yachts men do empty there tanks near the coast and what's worst are the ones who empty them at anchor but the real problem for rubbish isn't the yachts, although in the high of the summer months we do add to the rubbish problem with so many charters about , the real problem is the Greek them self , yesterday I watch two Greek guys just throw there coffee cups in the street , this morning as we was walking along the road at Palros a car drove by and again just throw his rubbish out of the window , while in Vathi on Sunday while a guy was using a Blower to gather all the leaves another man stop his motor bike making a call on his phone then throw some wrapper in the street and left his water empty bottle on the wall and drove off when there was a wheeler bins just a few metres away .
The plastic bags , bottles and paper flying in the road and in the sea is just amazing , two years a ago we was anchored in one house bay , the beach was full of rubbish there was a bed spring and a chest freezer considering this is a small island and no one lives there it meant some one had to have brought it over in a boat , there was two Greek guys here clearing it all up and they told us they would come over by boat each week to pile the rubbish up and take it away and when they return the following week the beach is full again .
I don't understand how on one hand the Greek are so proud of there country ,and then their just throw litter every where , it not as if there isn't any bins about .

It's not just the Greeks Vic. When we were in Malta we followed a local walking along the promenade at Tai'Xbeish (sp?) carrying a large black bag of rubbish. He walked straight past two large bins and threw it in the harbour.

Bob I have to agree with you , all country's have people who will litter , what I was saying is that in the case of Greece it not the yachtie who leave most of the rubbish , let put it another way ,my option other will say other wise , out of to the EU country we visit Greece come our the worst for rubbish , followed by Italy and then the south of Spain , Croatia was one of the cleanness .
