I am starting to put together a box of spare parts for the engine and transmission on my new boat to have with me whilst cruising. Some of these are obvious (pump impeller and the like) and some less so. What do you take with you in case a repair is needed whilst away from home?

I'm sure your engine manufacturer or supplier will give you details of a recommended spares pack if you ask. They will have details of the more obscure spares that are equally as important as the obvious ones that most of us would know.

Depends how capable you are of working on your engine, I would say a minimum of oil, fuel filters, impeller or water pump, alternator+pump belts, injector, assorted oddments of piping/jubilee clips and assorted oddments of wire/connectors/fuses.

The list can be endless but if you don't know how to fit/use the bits and are going to call a mechanic anyway, he can get what he needs.

Re: Spare engine parts on sailboat (based on Ford XLD)

Manufacturer's overhaul manual and wiring diagrams
Tools for jobs outlined below - Most engines have some odd Allen key bolts, Torq head drives etc
Good selection of new nuts, bolts and washers, O Rings.
Fuses, cable lugs, wire and multimeter
Enough oil for one sump refill plus
Anti-corrosive coolant additive
Spare lugs and length of light and heavy duty cable to bypass remote starter button on starter motor.
Fan belt(s)
Fuel Filter(s)
Oil Filter
Flexible piping to carry out repairs on fuel and fresh/salt water pipes
Thermostat and 'Radiator' Cap
Set Heater plugs
Complete sea water pump or means of using a seperate pump should the crankshaft driven seawater pump fail( not as expensive as you might think, with a spare you can then replace the bearing and seal on the bench without panic the next time the seal goes in a sandy river such as the Villiane)
Means of repairingholes in copper pipe ( self sealing tapes etc)
Tubs of plastic metal - repair kit
If going away from europe,
Spare set injectors
Spare throttle and gearbox cables
Spare starter motor
Cambelt and tools to replace same
Alternator
Spare Head gasket set

If I was really going 'foreign' then I would work out how to lift engine out with slings using the boom and carry some inlet and exhaust valves and springs
