Can anyone tell me whether Mercruiser engines tend to use nuts and bolts of imperial, metric or both sizes?

Just trying to decide what tools to stick onboard as an insurance (take tools and chances are things won't break!)

Apart from fuel filters, is it worth taking any other spare parts? I haven't room for spare pistons and starter motors though...

Assuming it's an american derived engine (chevy v6, v8 etc) they're imperial, and certainly all the drive stuff is imperial. BUT, I'd carry a set of both, because often the steel bolt is rusty enough the correct imperial spanner won't but, but you can sometimes get a slightly smaller metric one to fit. Also, if you carry a socket set, aim for hex, rather than 12 point sockets, for the same reasons.

2nd the belt. It's the only thing I've ever had go wrong, coming back into Needles Channel after a long trip, and it popped off (didn't break, and put it back on ). No power steering, and no water pump, was a bit of a pain, as it was quite rough.

Ever since then I've carried a spare

Afraid you need a whole work shop full of tools and them some more. you dont need a drill or angle grinder, till you need a drill or angle grinder!! Nearly any boat will have every sized nut bolt, screw, posidrive, philips, star thingies. known to man kind. They even invent special spanners for where no other spanner will fit. Dont forget impelors as well as the rest. Oh and loads of filters needed some times. Not forgetting the Soltron, cans of all sorts of oil and masses of paper towels. Bit's of wire, spare fuses, bulbs. Insulting tape is wonderfull as are cable ties. Glue. Little plugs or even matches for when self tappers fall out. Captain Tullys for little drips and silicone for the big ones. You will still sware to yourself about the thing you forgot.

Had a laugh. Well every one else at B&Q had a laugh at me, when i bought this big 6inch pipe yesterday and tried unsucessfully to get it in the car. So quietly???!!! Got out the chain saw and wapped a bit off!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Suggest a pulley wheel - the main one for the drive belt - especially if its made of reinforced plastic - check your boat to see........ We had a searay 215 express with a 5.7 merc and the wheel shattered at 45 knots. We glued it and drilled it and using wire put it into one bit and refitted it and got the belt back on. Then the wheel vaporised, so we limped home at 3 knots while the wife poured buckets of water over the engine to stop it from over heating!! Honest. Hope you enjoy the boat and see you soon. Roy

It's Mercan, so all A/F sizes and threads. But occasionally there is some metric, eg inside bought in components. So take both

You must have a very small car if you cannot fit a 6 inch pipe inside it. But then, you know what they say about men with small cars...

Ah, interesting tip given to me by Merc dealer. When buying new belt, buy the upgrade kit with metal pulley in it. Cheaper than belt alone. The plastic pulleys were a known problem, so Mercruiser put out a cheap upgrade set with belt and pulley. All plastic pulley have long since broken or been replaced at annual maintenance, so still a few upgrade kits around on dealers shelves that they will still sell at less than price of belt alone
