The Costa Brava and I think Catalunya have not been targeted for the array of Spanish Taxes applied sporadically among the Spanish Boating community.
Except for today, when the below arrived. I would be very surprised if this doesn't cost me money.

Dear Sirs,

The Reliance Agency (taxes) through the Regional Directorate of Customs and Special Taxes of Catalonia, called our Port , inter alia, the information necessary to implement the plan controls that the Agency Reliance has established for the effective implementation of taxes.

After the steps taken by the Associació Catalana Ports Esportius i Turístics (ACPET) information required to be provided were reduced to the following: blah blah......

ps ....and just in case you want to know more about Spanish tax read this link http://www.spainvia.com/boats.htm

I don't like this! I was hoping to just get 'registered' without going all the way with residencia. Anyone with boats in Spain got any advice on this? Meanwhile I'd better spend the weekend trying to understand the link - thanks for the post. I'll try not to 'shoot the messenger'.

Hi Geoff

Try these links as well - not sure if they are still current but worth a look.

And this is a big one – I can’t remember why I kept the link to it though. Still might be of interest.

And there’s loads of problems if you want to charter your boat in Spain – especially if she’s longer than 15 metres.

Good Luck

Hi Geoff, the article Davidj has put the link too sums it up really. You can only registar you boat Spanish once you become a resident at which time there is matriculation tax to pay, which in the case of your boat will be considerable.

If you become a Spanish resident you cannot then drive a foreign flagged vessel, only if said vessel has had Matriculation tax paid on it.

Anybody living in Spain for more than 6 months continuously in any one tax year is meant to registar for tax reasons.

Believe it or not any vessel sailing in Spanish waters for a continuous period of more than 6 months, should be reigistared Spanish with all the associated costs.

Dont panic however, in truth there are loads of UK and other flagged boats in Spanish marinas that have been here years. I know of a couple in our Marina who have been here 4 years livaboard on their UK flagged boat and have so far got away with it, given that they are in conravention to all the above they are doing well.

Technically to avoid all the above both boat and person should leave the country for a short period within the 6 months and return, of course one would have to provide proof that one had left.

Sorry it all sounds a bit negative but theses are facts I have learned (often the hard way)since coming to Spain.

I am reading into your comment that "sailing" means being with your boat and not just having your boat bobbing around in a marina while you're back in the UK. Have I got it right? (as far as you know)

spot on David, sad really cos if you and your other half decide to cruise the med and start by spending the first 6 plus months in Spain it could prove problem, though in practice it is very unlikely.

Lets say it was and you got caught and paid the money then moved on to France or Italy or Greece on your tour for a further 6 plus months would it all start again there?............emm ...plain daft if you ask me
