Hi, I am looking for a marina berth within an hours drive of either Barcelona, Valencia or Alicante airports. Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions?

Try Benicarlo, just south of Tarragona. New marina and still half empty. Easy access to Rua (? phonetics only - sorry!). Was there last week and was very impressed.

Denia ? Its between Valencia and Alicante, I believe.

I dunno the exact distances, but Steve_Clayton of this forum now lives there, and will be able to advise on the details.

Hi

it's worth getting hold of a copy of Bloc Marine (Med edition). Along with lots of other info, they list the marinas from West to East. i.e. Gibraltar to Greece + some in Tunisia, Morocco, etc. About 99% coverage of France, less for other areas. They list facilities, prices, etc with a pidgin English summary.

Unfortunately the website is being updated at present, but the link is : http://www.blocmarine.com/

Worth checking out Estartit. Friends of mine wintered there and reckoned it was the cheapest they could find.

A word of warning, most of the marinas in this area boast about their 4 year waiting list.

1. BARCELONA/ COSTA BRAVA.
Ideally be in Barcelone, petty crime is rife but the best marina, which is fairly secure is Puert Olimpico tel 939210106 almost the in centre of town . Marina Port Vell is at the end of the commercial harbour is expensive but well appointed. despite heavy Vigilante Securidad presence is prone to theft.
Alternatively try Palamos - they usually have some room and the town is quite pleasant tel 972601000. Rod reckons the prices high but I've always found it pleasant, cheap and they'll find room for U. Finally there's l'Escala, usually room there but a pretty dull place full of Belgians and Brits.

2. COSTA AZAHAR
Gandia has a fairly pleasant little marina just to port as U enter the main harbour, but if you want to be really posh why not Valencia itself in the Real Club Nautico - just make sure U and the crew are properly dressed (no shorts, sandals or casual attire) if U attempt entry to the clubhouse.

3. COSTA BLANCA
I once spent 8 weeks in Cartagena, a thoroughly pleasant little town despite all the cruise liners docking there. Club Nautico there is thoroughly friendly and prices weren't high. Good coach connections all round Spain tel 968 503100.
It's best to give denia a miss, as said of Rosslare, "It's good enough for ferries"

The marina closest to the Barcelona airport is probably Port Ginesta. I left my ship there in the winter of 1996/97 and found it very friendly and with a lot of facilities, such as a crane, shops etc. If I remember correctly, it is a 15/20 minute walk to the nearest station, which brings you into Barcelona and possibly with one change to the airport.

Ginesta has plenty of shops if you want chandleries or buy another boat - but a heck of a way to go for some bread!!!

Go north to Port Vell, Olympico is very noisy, Forum 2004 aint finished and neither is the one at Badalona.

Try Calpe (near Alicante) or Tarragona... we spent time in both in 2002 and we made to feel very welcome. Both are run by the local Club Nautico. Port Vell in Barcelona is fine but though never a victim of crime myself you do wonder when the marina staff hand you a list of spanish phrases to use on your VHF that includes ' there's an intruder on my boat'

I'm in Port Vell, I have heard of some crime, but being my second time there, havent experienced it. More likely to get pickpocketed in town though, but as in any big city, be careful, thats all. Sitges is a nice marina aswell, as is vilanova, the club nautico anyway, there is a great yard there aswell, with a big boat lift, just about big enough to lift me, which is why I'm going there again this yaer!

Consider Torrevieja, about half an hour S. of Alicante and Thomas Maestre at the entrance to the Mar Menor. On the S-shore of Mar Menor in Los Nietos is also a marina. I have read somewhere, that people overwinter there. By aware of the depth in the harbours around the Mar Menor. I visited there in 1995 and could get into these harbours with a depth of my ship of 1.80 meter, but it may have changed.
