Spanish Marina\'s close to Gibraltar

Hi all,

Can anyone help me out with names and web addresses for marinas as close to Gibraltar as possible? I've tried finding the marina web addresses for Tarifa and La Linea, but I can't seem to find anything - I'm searching in English, that could be my problem /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks, nick

What do you want it for? If you are trying to reserve a berth in advance you will be very lucky to get any sense out of them on line or even on the phone. They really only respond to face to face stuff in my experience.

Hi, Barbate to the West or La Duquesa to the East are probably best, there is not much at Tarifa.

I've found the same though have managed to book yacht clubs by fax (I use a service that allows me to send a fax via email and only costs 10p per fax!).

I'd second the vote for Barbate; it's one of the Junta de Andalucia Marina Chain and whilst not particularly attractive, being the nautical equivalent of a bomb-shelter; having sat out a full blown Straits Levanter there, we understood why

Be carefull here. I was there in 2001 when during a spring tide and a levanter the entire marina collapsed and was washed into the corner of the dockyard. Several fishing boats sank and yachts and mobos were severely damaged.

The harbour managment did nothing and later rebuild the pontoons to the same spec as before. I would not like to leave a boat unattended there. However there are a few marins around the corner up pase Cadiz and if you can find a space a few beyond Gib on the spanish coast. Depends what you ar elooking for.....

Re: Spanish Marina\'s close to Gibraltar

If you're going to leave the boat for any period, avoid the areas affected by the Levanter/Poniente gales. You'll just end up with a sand-blasted and mud coated boat. Don't even think of Tarifa!

Good marinas well clear of the gales can be found in the bay of Cadiz, or go to Estepona, to the east. All the websites for Andalucia marinas are at: http://www.andalucia.com/water_sports/marinas/home.htm

More detail on my website. Otherwise, think of the opposite shore.

Re: Spanish Marina\'s close to Gibraltar

thanks all for the replies - i'll spend some time and go over everyones suggestions and formulate a plan /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

one point though - portbooker.com is a nice idea, but a really crappy implementation. damnit!

Re: Spanish Marina\'s close to Gibraltar

We're in Duquesa and we love it. Twenty minutes by cab or an hour by bus from Gib. There are spaces.

Re: Spanish Marina\'s close to Gibraltar

We are really struggling with a berth in the Gib area for mid August through to October. Thought we would try Gib as they would appear to take resevations (have had the same experience with Spanish marinas and in particular Marinas di Andalucia not taking bookings). Anyway, Queensway quay are having major works done (again!) so no space for visitors and Marina Bay are full. Have sent an e-mail to Puerto Sherry but not optimistic of a reply.
Does any one know of any english Yacht guardinage companies in the Malaga area, just thought they might be able to help making a reservation, since they are on site so to speak?
We have also considered being lifted out but again haven't had much luck with replies to e-mails to Spanish yards. Any recommendations for english speaking yards on the coast around these parts?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Spanish Marina\'s close to Gibraltar

There seems to be room here in Almerimar - call the tower on 950 60 77 55 or fax on 950 49 73 53 They speak perfect English.

Otherwise, have you tried faxing instead of phoning and emails? It makes a big difference in my experience. See earlier in the thread where I gave Richard a link to an email fax service, Interfax. People place much more credence on a fax cos it's on a bit of paper which makes it official, eh? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I kid you not.
