Hi has anyone has personally experienced in getting spainish residency and imported their boat and goods , if so would you be happy to have a chat about your experience.
Just to say it's not for me but a friend .
This is too important just to use the forum for hearsay .
Thanks

Vic an interesting and as you say, very important subject.

My only observation is you are covering a number of different topics here, residency, importing boat and importing goods (what goods?) in the same thread.

From bitter experience, multi-headed threads run off the rails even quicker than normal so dividing these questions into 2 or 3 threads (residency, importing boat and importing goods) may be the way to go.

Looking forward to some accurate advice from some who know.

Mornin Vic. My wife and I have obtained Spanish Residency. We imported our live aboard yacht and also our commercial sailing school yacht. Bought a house. We have started a small business. Even got Spanish driving licenses.

I read lots of well intentioned replies on the subject on here and some are well off the mark. So my advice would be.....get an agent who specialises in exactly what your friend needs. We were given that advice, used it and for a not very big fee got our lives sorted by two expert and reliable pros. Worth every cent! ?

Like the above I moved to Spain and imported my boat and car free of the 12%matriculation tax by importing them within 28 days of getting my NIE card... For the boat I used a sailing lawyer based in Barcelona and considered it a good investment. For the car I used one of the Brit companies that offer this service online and it was OK. later I imported a 2nd less expensive car myself and the matriculation tax was very modest and the Gestoria uses a Spanish government book which lists the value of every car model and year and values them very low for the tax.
Anyway the Spanish Lawyer who did my boat...

Just be aware that the process changed 6 Jul for brits, as now you end up with a TIE card that is the same in all respect.

We are going through the process right now in the Canary Islands and there are so many variables regrading income, pensions, savings, etc etc that we have decided to use a person here to do most of it for us as she knows the system and what is needed at what stage in relation to here in Gran Canaria as each regional office can interpret the rules differently I have seen.

Here we had to sign on the Empradamiento first before we could get the appointment for the residencia office.

Other thing to be aware of is that there a lot of brits who have been living "under the radar" for many years in Spain now panicking and trying to make their residency official. Therefore appointment dates are not as quick as normal.

We are hoping to have it all done by end of fisrt week of Sep, and then of course we are liable for Spanish taxes but that is another story (going to declare the boat as soon as we get residencia to hopefully avoid the matriculation tax).

I was told it's going to take 40 days to process, and I'm due to pick mine up in mid Sept by appointment only, which can be made online.

I think the NIE is fairly straight forward and needs only passport and an address to get it - the problem for boat owners is that unless they 'import' their boat within 28 days of the NIE they have to pay 12% tax Matriculation on it. The system does value 2nd hand boats at a low level but...

The TIE just replaces the NIE and if you already have an NIE there is no urgency to change it.... The Padron /Empradamiento involves going to the town hall Ayuntemento with proof of address passport etc ... Not sure how this works for a liveaboad but basically the town wants as many people as possible with the Padron as they receive subsides from central government for each one.

There is every reason to believe that the Spanish will continue to grant TIE's after 2020 as they want Brits in their system but I suspect the boat might be then liable to VAT as well as the 12% matriculation tax...

I did all the above but with a house as well as the boat and to avoid matriculation tax I used a Spanish marine lawyer.. He is not going to give free advice but will do the job efficiently... and advise once he is on the payroll.. I have no commercial interest in the following and only post it to be helpful

One small thing to keep in mind: if your green residency card says permanente you have no obligation to change. However, if it says nothing, not even an expiration date, it means it's temporary and only valid for 5 years.
