This summer we are considering venturing west along the Spanish coast with a view to spending extended periods in Spain.
Most grateful to know what the pitfalls are regarding taxes (and how much) and so forth as I seem to remember reading that over 6 months and one triggers additional taxes. Currently resident in France but of course that could change with the above.

There is a useful explanatory note on the RYA Site. The key is your residency and if you intend to become resident it is possible to avoid any additional tax related to your boat.

See http://www.jimbsail.info/going-foreign/time-abroad. Or if you're in London tomorrow (Saturday) I'm available through the CA stand to answer these sorts of questions. Sunday, too.

The Cruising Association is also has "Open House" (at Limehouse Dock, just a few stops west from the Boat Show) from 18:00 Saturday, with short talks on "Going Foreign" and about some cruising areas. No charge! But you pay for any drinks and food you consume - see http://www.cruising.org.uk/node/22832
