Just preparing my spade for re galvanising. I thought I had seen an air hole near the head of the shank but can't find it now. Was it my imagination. Is the yellow paint cosmetic or was it intended to give a non stick surface to aid cleaning. Would appreciate confirmation from anyone who knows the answer.

With the help of the forum archives I have now found the hole which is in the bore of the shackle attachment point on the anchor side. You have to dig around a bit to find it. Still interested in opinions on the purpose of the paint other than to help to justify the extortionate cost.

My understanding is that the high-vis paint is to help you see where it is in places with clear water. Obviously only until it’s buried, or perhaps during recovery.
