I have a pair 3 or 4 years old, they ahve metal caps which screw on the tins, it is the 1Kg tin size I am using. I beleive the correct mix is achieved by 5 pumps resin to 1 pump hardener but the instructions have become unreadable and I was unable to find any on their web site. I note that some of the pumps they mentioned are "calibrated" and it is one pump of each to achieve the correct mix.

How do I check which mine are? is the wider diameter section at the top of the tube bigger on the resin pump of of the 1 & 1 pump system than on the hardener tube?

Anyone know if I can I use West Systems Cleaner to thin the epoxy if I need to? Sorry all with the boat so can't get numbers.

Do people remove the pumps from the tins overnight?

I used to have some, and I THINK it's 1 pump of each - with the larger one for the resin. You can easily check by pumping some water into a measuring jug from each (just strip and thoroughly dry afterwards). It's definitely 1:5. To be honest, I gave up using them because weighing it out on small digital scales (perfectly good sets available for about a tenner) was so much better. I'd be inclined not to leave the hardener pump in overnight because atmospheric humidity will get into the hardener and reduce it's effectiveness. It'll go dark red and stink of ammonia when that happens.

I use the pump to dispense but use a set of digital scales for the actual measurement. 105 resin with 205/6 hardener is 5 to 1 resin to hardener (5ml resin and 1 ml hardener). The pumps are not that accurate. As for not leaving the pump in the hardener I do it all the time and have done for the past 6 years with no ill effect. This is with 206 fast hardener.

What a Pratt I am! Read the post before replying. I was obviously refering to West epoxy not SP which I have no experience of. I shall now go and sit in the corner with a pointy hat on:rolleyes:

Sp pumps both measure the same amount, but the mix is 1:5 (ie one pump of hardener and 5 pumps of resin. West system pumps are calibrated, so it is one pump down only of each.
My pumps have been on for months. When you first use them again, just make sure they are actually primed and you dont pump 5 measures of air.
You dont want to thin epoxy. If it is warm is is runny enough to spread out extremely thinly..0.1mm maybe?

I've been using an SP handy pack of epoxy for a series of little jobs over the last few years, the resin seems to have lasted well in the pumps.
I do tape over the nozzles, mainly to stop it dripping on the bench.

It's irritating that this stuff is 2:1 and the big packs are 5:1, it's stuffed my cunning plan of topping up the handy little pump bottles from the big pack.

I'm pretty sure they are one pump each, easy to check, just drop one pump of each into clean containers of the same size and measure the depth or put them on a sale to cheak how accurate the pumps are.

You can thin epoxy resin with plain old Methylated spirits. add up 30% by volume or weight.
Try standing the can in some warm water, this will thin it down a bit as well.

Good luck and fair winds. :)

Are we talking about SP or Wests here? Wests pumps are one shot from each or are supposed to be but the Calibration method on the pump is done by cutting a length of plastics pipe which they haven't done it accurately will mean the ratio is not correct. I get a greater amount from the resin that the hardener. This may be just to ensure that it is resin rich not hardener rich which I believe can cause some problems or so I have heard said here abouts.

You are supposed to get more resin than hardener - it's specifically designed to do that! Read the instructions or gjgm's earlier post.
