BBC Scotlands recent series titled 'The Last Explorers' finished last week with an episode on Wiiliam Spiers Bruce who led the 'Scotia' scientific expedition to the Antarctic in 1900- 1904.
The presenter, Neil Oliver followed his route south from the Falkland Islands on board Skip Novaks yacht Pelagic and there is some impressive footage of the boat surging south in big seas, of life on board and sailing past massive icebergs. The story of how the South Orkneys and all the land south came to be controlled by Argentina who maintain a scientific base there to this day is also interesting. The expedition was the first to capture moving images in the Antarctic and some unseen footage is shown for the first time. The explorers were embarrassed to have to kill penguins to make penguin curry with onions (an anti scurvy favourite) because the daft birds were so easy to catch.
The whole programme is worth watching even if you are not a Scot.
