A childrens book ? Arthur Ransome's "We didn't mean to go to sea " should be compulsory reading each year for cruising skippers.
In the last 24 hours I've just come through a Force 7, gusting 8, with the 4 of 'em, and I can tell you I am exhausted.

'A childrens book?' - go on, have a go and try and fault the logic of every move, decisions of John the skipper, course directions, etc. - but make sure there's a child in the room to whom you can run to when frightened !

A great book. I particularly like the way the children get all the information they need to make the crossing successfully - how to reef, how to call a pilot, fog signals and shoals - quite naturally over the course of the day they spend with Jim Brading.

It is no coincidence that I sail a 26 foot long boat with red sails.

Hi JumbleDuck - your red sail vessel is obviously a dead ringer for Goblin.

I did the route, Harwich to Vlissingen in 2004 in my Francis 26, but no red sails !
