Taking a trip to the Southern Ionian soon.

Which are the best quiet anchorages? As judged by holding, shelter, peace, scenery. Are there any uninhabited islands with decent remote ancorages? I'm told it's easy to find solitude. Is it?

Which are the best town/village places? Is there anywhere pretty you can have a decent meal out but still avoid the crowds?

Is there anywhere really exceptional that must not be missed?

TIA

How long? How far south?

Levkada to N Cephallinia is one of the more crowded sailing areas in Greece (tho' sparse by Solent, W Brittany or W Mediterranean standards).

You'll always find a quiet anchorage if you're prepared to poke into the little bays which aren't marked as anchorages, and quite a few that are marked are pretty good. Drop a hook and take a line ashore.

Check my website for places to go, tavernas not to miss. Meganisi is a must, but don't automatically go to the quayside restaurants, tempting though that solution may seem. Go up the hill, seek out a place in Spatahori or Katomerion. Having said that, Greece doesn't do 'gourmet'. You're looking for the unexpected - for atmosphere.

Personally, I love squeezing into Astakos, on the mainland. The evening Volta along the quayside, when all the families come out to walk and gossip, is quite a sight (pretty late - 10pm). There are few tourists in this agricultural village.

Try the bay behind Nisos Petalas, on the mainland, halfway between Astakos and Oxia; 38°24'N 21°07'E: scores 10/10 for holding, shelter, peace, and scenery. Pretty uninhabited too, except by the ubiquitous greek goat...
