Thanks, always liked the idea of the Southerly keel/ballast system. But, not quite sure what the hinge washers are and how they found out they were damaged. Are they either side of the pivot?

Quite understand if the details are not available to you.

I am uncertain as to where you have got your inaccurate information from I am the owner of this boat and you would be better served not passing incomplete information on a subject you are not in complete knowledge of. Our boat is having a keel plate checked southerly are involved and are doing a tremendous job with all their expertise in sorting out the minor problem we have.

You would do better to refrain from make arbitrary comments about something you know nothing about.

Southerly are tremendous well built quality boats. But like with all engineered item things can go wrong at times.
Your comments regarding its hours and the washers are inaccurate.
Please refrain from making such posts about our boat.

Blimey!

Why miserable?

The way the internet works, in a few months this completely inaccurate report would have become "Brand new Southerly 32s looses their keels as washers explode after only 2 miles" and the value of perfectly good boats would have taken a dip.

Why shouldn't the owner act to quash this before it gathers momentum?

Perhaps the owner would like to post some more photos. I'm sure both Southerly and non-Southerley owners would be very interested.
What does it look like from the inside?
Other than it's a Southerley 32 the actual identity of the boat is still unknown.

I misinterpreted your question, obviously. I don't think you can see much of the keel mechanism on the inside.

I was just curious as to how the whole mechanism was mounted in the hull. It looks very substantial.
Obviously the hull is lowered down on top of it but then what?

The big rusty lump is the ballast, which is bolted to the hull. The keel then swings up and down, powered by hydraulic ram, inside a waterproof box. If you do a Google Images search for southerly keel, you'll find some good diagrams.

As I understand it, the plate is fitted (bolted) in a recess in the hull moulding, so as to be flush. Also known as the grounding plate? The swing keel is pivoted on some sort of hinge on the plate. The pair provide the ballast. Swing keel is raised by a pulley system and hydraulics. I was wondering what the washers were and if the either side of the pivot, when the owner came on and told us off. It would be nice if he explained what was going on, rather than wind up speculation. But, it is his boat, so he calls the shots.

Edit: Oops, slow typist here, pvb is quicker.

He hasnt quashed anything. Its still a newish very expensive boat that is having to be taken to bits by its builder. Would be better if he were civil and gave the correct information.
