We recently delivered a Southerly 35rs from Mallorca to Chichester. The Skipper took some film along the way and sent it to me for some editing. For those who are interested, I hope you enjoy:

Following the recent threads about the GoPro and the importance of audio, I must apologise to Dylan for the lack of “sailing noises” and the loud overlaid music. He will at least be pleased to hear that it was all filmed on a cheap and cheerful camera (I’m not sure what model) and that all the verticals are as they should be… That said the quality is lacking a bit and I dare say that a GoPro may have done a better job ;-0 There are some noticeable sounds, in particular when the Jet takes off from Gibraltar!

Incidentally, the yacht is now for sale; very well equipped and in great condition:

Does anyone know the name of the vessel at minute 2.52?

Just back from two weeks' sailing in Gibraltar. I believe that the vessel in question is Star Flyer, as she was around on a couple of the days that we were there. Company logo on the hull referred to Star Clippers.

OK - Here she is:

A little more interesting than most cruise ships, but still!

I guess she will be off to the Caribbean soon...

always fancied the southerly 35 and got to the final contract signing stage to buy one of the first ones beforfe backing out. Not my best ever decision - the price from southerley was 150k all in so I would now be showing a profit!

I'm very surprised that you would do something on the cheap.

Is that including the fall in value of the pound?

Anyways... Nce boat, but if I had a choice between one of those and yours... I would tke yours..

It's a difficult comparison PD. The interior of the southerly is swedish standards or better, and much though I like my bowman built boat, I wouldnt rate it that high. Plus the southerly had that great variable draft facility. Against that it doesnt sail as well as my boat which really is something special in that respect and it doesnt have the storage either. Plus its much more expensive

The smaller southerlies are way overpriced IMHO... The 35 now is gonna be close on 200k set up right... Bonkers cash.

I used to be very keen, but they are too big and bulky. The starlight is almost the definitive modernish 35 footer. I am surprised now at how little you can get one for...

I must confess that a lot of modern designs are all the same to me, whiteish.

However, I spotted an unusally attractive boat in the marina, a lot lower in the water than the common run. Being a shortarse I always valued low tipsides above headroom.

Lo, it was a Starlight.

Southerly 110's have a used asking price from around £115,000 and are at least 10 years newer than the equivalent Starlight. Not so large a gap as you might imagine.

My point was the price differential is not as great as indicated. The 110 and 35 use the same hull although iirc the 35 sail configuration differs.

As I have sailed neither I cannot comment but I believe the 110 is the first of the truly modern Southerlies that sails far better than it's forebears. And yes Starlights have a good sailing reputation although when we raced against one in Dartmouth Regatta PY (in an old Excalibur 36) a few years back we always beat it over the water and on handicap so it is not that quick (or well sailed).
