On a previous thread I said I was considering changing boats to something that would go through French canals easily but still sail OK. Southerly 115s were suggested and I have been taking a look. It is suggested that older ones (Mk1,2?) had problems in quartering seas due to the single rudder being necessarily high in the water cos it's a lift keel boat.
Later ones had twin rudders. Then I read "sailing performance is very good" (compared to what?)

Anyone got one? I like the layout, self tacking rig, open airy interior, shoal draft capability and low air draught. The Mk 1 and 2 boats are not too expensive either. Your comments would be welcome.....

Suggest you PM Grehan if he is still around, from memory he took his 115 through the canals.

We bought a Southerly115 Series 1 in 2006 and have been absolutely delighted with it. The only slight disadvantage we have come up against is that the autohelm cannot cope with reaching in a quartering sea with wind F6 and above. Helming manually and anticipating the effect of the wave coming up on you is not difficult and makes for a straight course. This slight disadvantage is hugely outweighed by the many benefits of the Southerly. PM me if you want a chat on the phone.
