Hi all,

What are peoples thoughts on moving a boat from Southampton to Kiel (the very north of Germany) in Jan/Feb? And what are the legalities of running the boat unregistered (SSR) to Germany where it will then be properly registered? Thanks, nick

It isn't SSR'd yet... Trying to figure out if I have go through with it, in order to just to sail to Germany and register again...

Jan/Feb isn't my preference either, but I'd like to get it over here as soon as possible. But it must be after December!

I think that in theory you probably don't have to be. In practise the German authorities can want to see your registration. The German Customs asked to see my boat's registration cert this summer.

Re: Southampton -> Kiel, Germany

Was one infamous winter (not this century) when you could walk all the way across the Baltic...

But more typically it will just be blimmin cold.

Re: Southampton -> Kiel, Germany

well, i think the idea of ice floes and near perpetual below freezing temperatures have pretty much written that whole idea off.

oooh my first winter in europe, so much to learn. i still haven't entirely accepted the fact that you can't go sailing in winter... my next boat will be an icebreaker like Tara for sure /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Be aware that the German and Dutch Customs can be very much more keen on checking your paperwork and VAT status than their UK counterparts. I was boarded once between Cuxhaven and Den Helder, requested but refused to be boarded a second time just outside the same and then stopped whilst in the Marina there on a recent trip from Laboe (Kiel) to Ipswich. A friend in Laboe (yachtsman and broker) tells me that the moment any vessel bearing a foriegn flag appears in the marina the customs people are onto them like a shot.

I'd wait 'till later in the year, We had perfect weather back in August.....

it will be at least as "properly" resigtered in the uk as in germany, harumph.

If you are brit national it can be uk registred, with no nasty taxes. Are they no sailing taxes for german registered boat?

hi, just done reverse trip kiel to ipswich onboard ex german registered catamaran and had no trouble. didnt register under ssr until return to uk in october 2006.
make sure your vat invoices and bill of sale is current.
