Well, once again I put pen to paper to comment on the boat show. I tend to park in Hythe Marina where I have my boat and catch the Hythe Ferry. Normally you can walk around the corner from the ferry terminal and enter through the side gate. For some reason this year the organiser decided to only let special guests through here, and made us walk all the way around adding nearly half a mile to the trip. At the same time they turned my family around they actually prevented a man on an electric scooter from going in, one of those modern types of wheel chairs. He followed us around to the entrance but I have no idea how he was going to negotiate the bridges acros the road.

Well, once in, you have all the familiar faces year after year, selling the same stuff. We walked around the marina and I stopped at the Hardy. I have never seen such disinterested sales people as the Hardy saleman. This year I walked down the finger to look through the window, literally inches from the salesman who loked at his feet the entire time and did not even say hello! A couple of years ago i wanted to have a look around and the sales lady said by appointment only and walked off to get a cup of tea. I guess i do not look the sort to afford one! It does make you wonder how on earth this country stays in business with such disinterested staff. If my staff did this I would never have any customers.

Certainly you would not see this in America, where they would make you welcome and sow the seeds of a potential sale sometime in the future.

Once again there were few places to sit, thank you to MDL for their hospitality, although only jelly beans were on offer, this does not go well with wine!

My wife was hungry but one place we stopped they wanted £4 for a sandwich, I suggested we eat elsewhere.

having paid 3 x £16 plus £15 for the ferry for the three of us, I have come to the conclusion that this is not worth the money, any savings on odd bits of chandlery are countered by the cost of entrance and the exhaustion of the endless walk.

Perhaps all the chandleries should form their own trade show, free entry and come and buy all you can carry, free parking, and a place to sit and rest from all that buying!!

We went to the show on Saturday.

Overall I enjoyed but have to agree with the attitude from the Hardy salesman. I also walked down the finger to look at the Commodore 42 but the sales guy completely ignored any attempt at conversation and was more interested in smoking and coughing.

We looked at the Hardy 42, had a chat to the sales staff and really liked the boat. Then I made the error of asking the price of the boat we were on - 600k  for a 42ftr.

I completely agree. I've been going to the Show for over 25 years but couldn't face another Groundhog Day this year. In theory, if you're in the market for new boat, then it should provide a great opportunity to make comparisons and cut a deal. However, the Show does seem to have become disfunctional in this respect, going by some of the comments on the Forum.

From MDL we got peanuts plus chocolates and lollies for the kids, plus beer, wine and coffee, as well as a friendlt warm welcome and a welcome soft seat.

Agree about places to sit in general - far far too few, and yes most of the food the usual overpriced rubbish.

I didn't bother to go this year, as I came to the same conclusion as yourself, food too expensive, nowhere to rest, sales people always seem to have something more important to do than to speak to the punters, and as for paying the gate price entrance fee to go shopping forget it! it's cheaper on line.

I didnt go this year but my Mum in her 60's went for a look around, she told me she had always gone in the Mayflower park entrance but it was 'special tickets' only, she had to then walk all the way around...not good really.

Agree with the ticket prices, they have always been high, but i would have thought the sellers should be stumping up the cost of entrance fee (who gets that money anyway?)

I agree with all the negative comments said, avoided this year, no way will i go again we had a rubbish time last year and many of the boats had appointment viewing only even the small ones.

As food goes dont get me started, what a complete and utter rip off, this show is only good for the wealthy ones amoungst us. I hope this year they are down on visiters, and they decide to change the format, priceing, completly. For us last year all in with 4 tickets and fuel and food cost us just under £110 for the day of non existent entertainment.:mad:

Not been for years. Cant see the point. Same old stuff year in year out. Little new other than plastic gizmo's. Why do people pay to go see a boat & then cant view as they would have wished ? Same old complaints about food & rest areas which they do nothing about.
Same old story. Why o why do people bother ?

Being the first year we have ever been, SWMBO and I were looking to get on some boats so she could get an idea of what she would like when we bite the bullet in some years time, but alas, she and I both felt very intimidated by the whole experience of the show.

Like others have stated before, it's expensive, not many places to rest the old legs after walking for a few hours and food very expensive.

And I thought going slightly smart would have made a difference :)

We will visit London's show early next year and see how that pans out, but in all honesty, wont be rushing to go back to PSP.

Ye gods but we British are a load of hand wringing whiners aren't we? No wonder we're referred to as "whinging poms"!

We've had people whinging about British boats and desperately trying to come up with reasons why we shouldn't be proud of building some of the best boats in the world.

We've had people whinging that they have to actually ask to look on board boats at the boatshow rather than having salesmen hurl themselves to the ground to form a red carpet for them to walk up.

And now we've got people whinging that the food is a bit expensive at boatshows (no, really!?), and that it's the same as other years, full of boats...!

I had a fantastic time at the boatshow, went on pretty much everything I wanted to go on without any hassle, was wowed by the quality and variety of boats on offer (British and otherwise), and I wandered over to M&S and bought myself a very nice tuna roll, a choccie bar, a packet of crisps and a bottle of water for less than four quid.

I've obviously gone badly wrong somewhere, I had fun!

I'm with you Ari except for the M&S food. Didn't think prices charged at the hog roast and guinness bar were too excessive but my mate did moan at the prices for a prawn sandwich upstairs at the champagne bar. I wisely stayed downstairs.

I wasn't sure that I was going to go, and ended up paying the full ticket price last Friday.

I was made very welcome by MDL - a couple of beers and wine, as well as peanuts and crisps. I was well aware of the rip-off food prices at the show generally from previous years, and took sandwiches and drinks with us.

Yes, lots of the boats were marked "by appointment only" but if you waited for a quiet moment and then asked nicely I didn't have anyone refuse to let me on board. Was wowed by the layout of some boats, unimpressed by the finish of others I expected to be impressed by, and overall went away happy but footsore.

I will do it again, but I'm always on my guard not to get ripped off too much.

We spent the weekend down there and have to admit that we really enjoyed it. We stayed at the Boathouse Hotel in Hythe which was as stones throw from the ferry which took us door to door. We had some free tickets courtesy of Sealine so could use Gate F which was literally next door to the ferry terminal.

We looked at loads of boats and have to say that on the stands and boats we visited we were made to feel very welcome. All in all a good show for us and we will be going again next year. We will be making a long weekend of it next time though as we didnt feel we had enough time to do the show justice. We will certainly be staying at the Boathouse again the hotel is fantastic. We have just booked our room for next year :)

Whew... I thought I was the only one...

I thought it was brilliant to, went on the most expensive boats I could get on, & without hindrance, friendly sales people (and this was the last Sunday - they'd had 2 weeks of wheel kickers by then! :D... food is ALWAYS expensive at these shows so why complain about it just take a picnic - got home tired with sore feet - yet another cracker!

How true

Yep food was expensive, yep drinks were expensive, Hell, boating is expensive!!

We went by boat, moored at Town Quay £8, free entry, food and drink for three of us £48, fuel to and from show £60 by boat, fuel from home to boat £120, the food cost sort of pales in to insignificance when you compare to fuel costs!

Great show in my opinion but as with most shows of any description the food and drink is always a premium!

It's not one of those events that I would go to just for "a good day out" - it is expensive, it is crowded, and some of the exhibitors can get a bit surley if they come to the conclusion that you are the five hundredth person that day who just wants to press the buttons with no intention whatsoever of purchasing.

My wife and I go when we have a specific purchase in mind and want to research options - otherwise, we'll stay away and enjoy another weekend of sailing.

Bealieu boat jumble.

OK you have to pay to get in but it does include entry to the Motor Museum.
