During the summer we put into Swanwick Marina, Hamble and flew home for a few days. Metered taxi fare from Lower Swanwick to Southampton airport was about £11. Returning we asked for a taxi from the airport taxi desk (Airport Cars?) and were asked to pay £16.50. I declined and found a taxi outside that had just dropped his passengers. Metered fare was similar to the outbound trip.

Moral: If you dont want to get ripped off either find a non-airport arriving taxi, or walk to the railway station (about 3 mins) and get a regular taxi there.

Sadly, whatever the airport taxi charges you, that rip-off is peanuts compared to the price you'll be charged for renting a hole in the water on the Hamble for a few days!

If you've time to look them up in the phone book, Roadrunners and Eastleigh Cabs are similarly reasonable local radio cabs. Others are doubtless as good, just I've never used them.

I fly out of Southampton twice a month. Normally I use Airport Cars of Ferndown, but have used others. Airport Carz (I think it's spelt) of Southampton Airport seem about the same price. However, they have obviously done a deal with the airport because the airport makes it difficult for all other taxi firms.

If you think that's bad try Heathrow. Taking a cab from the rank at arrivals costs between two and three times as much as getting a taxi to come from your destination and pick you up at departures.
