South West Coast - where would you moor?

Moving up to 26/28 footer next year. Presently keep my Shrimper near Falmouth in a beautiful inlet off the Carrick Roads. I'd like to keep a bigger boat closer to home (Glos) preferably on a pontoon mooring. Costs seem enormous! e.g. 3k for Mylor etc.
CAn anyone recommend a marina between Exeter and Plymouth that is good value? Alternatively a good boatyard mooring close to the sea that is affordable.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I moved from Falmouth to Plymouth this year because of cost. I have a 25' boat and Falmouth Marina wanted about £2,300. Moved to Plymouth Yacht Haven at Mountbatten; cost just under £1,400.

Went through a similar exercise earlier this year. One of the cheapest marinas, but on the west side of the Tamar, was Torpoint Yacht Harbour (£1500 for a 8.5m boat), but I have never visited it. Plymouth Yacht Haven worked out at £1750 but I was not particularly impressed by its location. This comment is not a criticism of the cruising area but on the marina as a base. Most of my sailing is of the (long) weekend type which often necessitates spending the first and/or last nights at home base so that the prospect of overlooking the gasometers at Plymouth didn't appeal. Local pubbing also seemed a bit limited - perhaps others will disagree! Elsewhere in Plymouth, QAB would charge about £2000. Further east, on the Dart, there is Noss at £2250 and Kingswear at £2500 or in Torbay the MDLs: Brixham at £2200 and Torquay at £2750. There's also the marina at Exmouth but I have no idea of prices. In the end we decided to stay on our swinging mooring in the Dart and spend all the money saved in the Dartmouth pubs. A useful web site listing marinas is www.yotting.com following the links: company directory/ services/ marinas. I would be interested to hear if you find anything reasonable.

What's a 'swinging mooring' - wives/keys/ash-trays?
Seriously though ... what is it and how does the cost compare? I quite fancy a boat in the Dart - striking distance of Bristol (1.5 hours) and so much to do there (river, inlets, Dartmouth, sea).

I'm beginning to realise how lucky I am ... my boat is in Bristol docks (10 minutes from my house!) and costs £400/year to moor. It may not be the south coast but at least I get onto the boat 2 or 3 times a week (even if it is just to re-arrange the cushions!).

consider mooring in the Bristol channel. near to glos, v cheap, easy access to the sw and eire. lots of good clubs to join. not crowded like the south coast.
my club mooring cost me nothing!

We too live in Gloucestershire. We have found that Exmouth is the easiest place to get to on a friday evening. It is relatively cheap. We have bought our own mooring and pay around 60 pounds in annual river fees. The mooring originally cost approx. !000 pounds, eight years ago. We also pay for annual maintainance on our mooring, approx. 100 pounds. Roughly every five years we have the ground chain replaced, last time it cost 400 pounds. The marina offers limited facilities. Diesel is available, but as yet there are no toilet or shower facilities. There is a boat taxi service that runs every hour from Exmouth dock in the summer. We think that Exmouth offers good value for money.

Swinging mooring is single chain down to seabed so boat swings with the tide. Dartmouth is great but traffic + parking in the summer can be a real pain. Exmouth marina is crap - no facilities but the river Exe is good, as described above, although the cost to buy a mooring is now probably a fair bit more, depending where it is.

Try Noss, easy access since it is on the east bank of the Dart lots of parking space, acessable at all tide states etc.
Marina £220 p/metre river moorings £170 p/metre

Good luck

Got a contact for Bristol Docks moorings? I've got an 11m boat, but Bristol Marina want about 1600 pa for it. Who controls your mooring, and where is it in the docks?

Mountbatten's brilliant.... The New Inn, and The Boringdon Arms in close support. The Boringdon's brilliant... loads of real ales really well kept, and sausage sarnies for winter work days for a quid! I've just found a little boatyard up the Lynher, about two miles from the job I've got for this winter, for 30 quid a week.
