South Pacific Windlass from Boat Gear Direct

Have the vertical capstan and a mate has the horizontal one, we both praise these machines, they do what is says on the tin and at very reduced power consumption, and with a simular up hauling speed of their competitors.

At this point after some 4 years of use only once have I tripped the 19 amp breaker that was caused by a fouled anchor.
Go ahead IMHO, you will not be disappointed.

Think you will find the gear design only allows for one way operation - no powered lowering. In many applications this is a serious disadvantage. Competitors, although more expensive do have this facility.

The spec indicates it does pay-out as well as lift.

Sorry - was looking at the vertical type.

Would still be a bit concerned about something that sells at almost half the price of its very well established competitors! (Lofrans, Quick, Lewmar etc)

Yes, I agree, that is why I was asking. The supplier is the main supplier of mooring tackle on the East Coast supplying all the commercial moorings, Trinity House, RNLI, and most of the contractors who supply and maintain moorings so their reputation and standard of mooring product is second to non. Also good, helpfull people to deal with and local to my mooring.

Thanks for all the feedback, I will go and have a look and based on the feedback, probably buy!

I was struggling a bit with this but I guess stern too mooring would be one application where powered lowering is useful to adjust the distance of the stern from the quay.

Both horizontal and vertical types allow powered lowering. I had an South Pacific 800 series horizontal on my last boat and it had a switch to choose between powered lowering and freefall, the latter option being preferred by fishermen apparently. It performed perfectly well and gave no trouble. I would fit another but for the fact that I now use 8-plait rope on my anchor rode and South Pacific say their windlasses must have 3 strand.

I think that you will find they all have free-fall, unless their design has changed. Spur gears are cheaper to produce hence the lower price and also about 50% more efficient than worm and wheel and need a braking system unlike the worm. Thatt is one reason for their low power consumption.
