Hello,

Possibly made a costly mistake lost my anchor last year and ordered a whole new setup 6m of 8mm chain and 150m of rope. Upon fitting I noticed that the gypsy is 6mm :(. When I checked the windlass stats it said 6mm/8mm selectable so was under the impression you could somehow change between the size (first time using a windlass).

Does anyone know if south pacific still exist the website looks incredibly old or if there is anywhere else I can buy a replacement gypsy i.e an 8mm one. Really would rather buy an 8mm gypsy for it than have to replace the chain/rope.

Thanks in advance.

if I read this correct you have only bought 6m of chain, don’t know the size of rope but would have thought this should fit the current gypsy. Wouldn’t it still be easier and a lot cheaper just to change the chain to 6mm,

I had a very helpful email from South Pacific about three years ago.

If you download the drawing, you can see the part numbers for the three selectable gypsies.

Boat Gear Direct (BGD) seem to be the UK distributors. A new gypsy on their website is just £100 when I looked earlier this year. It would be a lot cheaper to replace the chain . 6m of chain seems very little compared with 150 m of rope.

Hello,

Thank you for all your replies.

Boathook thank you kindly I contacted Boat Gear Direct and a kind gentleman called Paul had an 8mm gypsy tucked away and I managed to order it from him for a very very good price of just over £40 including delivery!

Daverw yes I stupidly went by the receipt that came with the boat saying 8mm gypsy and he had obviously switched it out to a 6mm. It would have been cheaper to just change the chain but I am not savvy with splicing rope so wanted to see if i could change the gypsy for a decent price to save the hassle of doing that.

Again thanks for all your replies much appreciated.

Steve.
