Off for a few days sailing next week out of Port Grimaud (Golfe du St Tropez) - does anyone have any suggestions on where to go around there. We're probably heading off to the Iles d'Hyeres - are there other places to consider or to visit en route? Oh, and where were those rocks that Mirabella managed to find?

Salut

Mirabella bay is 30 miles to the west.

Port Grimaud itself is a nice destination for many, and a good bay in which to hide from westerlies around the corner of cap camarat and evenmore so round the next major cap Sicie when you change from sailing slightly south to slightly north.

The nasty winds are from the west mistral/tramontane and you will be well-warned about them from marinas if they blow up - short seas and f8 make handling the boat a bit hairy.

Porquerolles is nice, you can hire bikes. I'm planning to go there meself soon. Le lavandou cheap enough and seasidey, not too southern-france posh.

St Raphael looks quite pleasant from shoreside, never sailed there (yet).

Also going a little further east theres a good bay at Agay with laid moorings. The town itself is more like Hayling Island than Cannes, 'cept for topless sunbathers.

Once past Agay, going east, there's loads of little creeks (calanques), which boats anchor in for a day's fishing, swimming and whatever else they get up to.

Eventually, you come around the corner into the bay of Cannes - big glam, wall-to-wall boats, old ladies with poodles, topless cars, etc.

Suspect Mr TCM has mixed up his east and west with regard to Mirabella Rocks, but he's bigger than me, so I won't mention it.

oop yes, i have. Mirabella-land is east, not west. Also the guy said he was going west to iles d'heyeres. Also TK is actually bigger than me, but he sits down a bit more so proably think loads of people are bigger than he is...

Can we now formally name Bealieu -sur - Mer, Mirabella Bay? Twould be nice to think that a fellow forumite manged to rename the atlas.

Bit kind of everyone to say she 'hit rocks' .. I thought she hit mainland Europe. Given his new-found sense of direction perhaps it really was TCM at the helm .

In addition there are places like Bandol and Cassis which are worth visiting .. loads of 'Calanques' before Marseilles too.

i'm not the first to coin the phrase "mirabella bay", as it happens, but it might have been another forumite.

Anyway I think you're quite horrid to mention it at all. When I was on M5, we were all very nicley behaved, and when we asked for any drinks nobody said "actually, could i have that on the rocks?" which I bet you would have out of sniggering nastiness.

Dont forget port cross thats my faverit place in Spring and autum when its quite. There are a couple of nice bays to anchor as well, mostly i go directly to port cross and pick up a bouy its half price of the pontoon and if it blows and they dont come out for the money you dont pay that day!

Great village with white sand drifting about and good walks as i cant aford the med in summer so i cant say how it is now!

Last time i was in the porquerolles the capitan pointed to a place,i couldent see it? I asked again he said "between those boats"not haveing a MOBO i had to go bows to and push very hard to squeez in!!! Its worth it though another very nice island with lots of bays to anchor.

Yourll have a wonderful time its great there.

My favorite spot, though it might be a bit west for you, is the Calanques just west of Cassis (43° 13' N 05° 32' E).
Also it is a good bolt hole when a Mistral is blowing.

And a little further West, try Frioul. It is a marina on a former quarantine island just off Marseille. There are ferries to Marseille.

Further West, there are a few smaller ports, but after Caro the next shelter is Ste Marie de la Mer (pic).

Further west still, you have a mostly sandy coastline with many ports all the way to Spain.
