Yep a South Devon Harbour photo ; not sure where else to post Photos as South Devon or our West Country does not seem to be catered for , its not Bristol Channel , East Coast , Inland Rivers , Thames etc etc , so where indeed ?
Perhaps our
Moderator can shed his /her opinion on the matter ?

Guess our South Devon is in the middle of a High Pressure area ? am I right ? Shaldon Bridge View Phyl.jpg

First Mate and I spent 5 days there earlier in the year.

Lovely spot, nice town and friendly harbour staff.

Came across a swimmer in the middle of the channel when leaving. Good thing it was slack, we could not have stopped on full ebb.

She quickly became aware of the danger of swimming among boats leaving the Harbour.

Stopped on a large buoy opposite the ship dock - the pontoons were full of smaller boats, none of whom fancied our heavy tub hanging off then rafted up.

Well yep thats what happens all too often when Swimmers , Paddle Boards , Cannoes etc etc all launch from the Back Beach (or River Beach) Teignmouth ; where the water is shallow plus warm ; with an ebbing tide they get swept towards the narrow Estuary Mouth where the current flows fast directly into the Sea beyond where the Main Navigation Channel has a sharp bend so navigating hazzards is most tricky ; Luckily the RNLI has a Boat plus launching ramp also on the Back Beach ; most risky place to wander around afloat

Friendly Local Folk though {:)#

Teignmouth……..Shaldon.

Yep , never the twain shall meet : divided by a wide Estuary , connected only by a LONG bridge , once I understand having the honour of being the longest timber bridge in England ? now Concrete and steel , it does have a lifting portion near the Teignmouth side of the river , where the Main River Channel flows ; strangly never seen or heard of the lifting bridge being used to allow tall ships up river , but the Bridge gets 'completely closed off' every other year or so to allow for Maintainence Works which involve checking the Support structures for damage n decay ; involves a 20 to 30 mile detour through Newton Abbot ; its sheduled to happen this Autumn

We rescued 3 girls there this year that had got stuck between two boats rafted on one of the pontoons. They had been swimming towards the pontoon when the ebb dragged them between the boats. I hate to think what would have happened if we hadn't been there as they were out of sight from the beach.
It can be very deceiving there as the water is really still close in and all of a sudden your into a really fast current.

It's great fun to watch the dinghies racing on the river in front of Shaldon as you can see the whole course. If you don't head up into the tide, you are stuffed and may not even finish. Experienced racers are going slow at the back crabbing in the tide whilst the more gung ho are steadily getting pushed down and often don't see what is happening till it is too late. Anyone can have a go as you can with the rowing races etc.

The regatta is one of the oldest in the Country and a tremendous family event, highly recommended:

It looks nice. I've never been there. I think that any forum would do, except the East Coast - they get nervous when they see deep water.

Deepwater you say , well this photo is about half tide and showing the large mid river drying hard mud known as 'Salty' on the Shaldon side of the Teign (Shaldon on right of photos) ; at low tide one can nearly walk accross the river from Shaldon to Teignmouth , its just the main channel on the Teignmouth Bank thats taking all the water flowing in /out so the current is pretty swift , so not passable without a boat .

'Salty' used to be an island , with vegitation and small trees growing upon it , but some years ago its believed that a Council /Harbour Authority ordered that the Island be Demolished and laid flat , to improove the current flow in the Estuary .

Now 'Salty' is the preserve of Dog Walkers /Dogs plus Cockle Fishermen , with occasional Holiday makers wandering accross and along it .

Methinks that part of the scenic magic of Teignmouth /Shaldon is that the river Teign faces due East outwards so up river is due West

This gives many beautifull Sunrises and also Sunsetts (not at the same time but on each day)

Looking up river into the setting sun over the river can be just magic just magic
