south coast anodes

24 carat gold work well for me. But only bolt them on just before launching:D

I use anodes direct, actually ordered from them again just a few days ago. Almost all zinc for sea use, although I believe more people are now moving to aluminium.

Yep. I have made that transition and can confirm they work longer and better but apart from the out drive ring anode you cant buy them as a kit so you do have to cut the bar type to shape in order to fit the rest of the outdrive assembly. Very pleased with the added longevity too. No more mid season beaching to change anodes. (I berth opposite a 60 foot steel Dutch trawler and I'm sure he aggravated my anode wear)

I’m certainly no expert, but does increased longevity mean that what you’re trying to protect is more likely to corrode?

Quite the opposite in this instance according to the chemistry buffs. Something about more joules contained within the ali anode. I am not conversant enough to discuss it intelligently but simply follow the scientific literature like a sheep and observe. My observation would indicate they are correct because the ali is dissolving away but not as rapidly. Besides having it work longer if nothing else means I have that protection longer. Previously I was changing mid season because they were shot. And when they were shot I was receiving no protection at all.

I switched to aluminium just under a year ago. The boat came out in April for anti fouling and the wear was appreciably less. At a push I could get close to 18 months with zinc, with aluminium I reckon easily 2 years. I’ll get a better idea when she’s lifted again towards the end of September.

I changed for two reasons. Firstly recommendations from a couple of Broom owners, one who’s used aluminium for years. Secondly, as Brooms messed up when fitting the studs, my boat has non-standard centres so I have to have anodes machined to fit. These came from a company who supplies a lot of commercial vessels and they recommended aluminium over zinc.

They’re cheaper, and weigh a lot less which means it’s no longer a two man job to change my big ones on the hull.

Solent Anodes sell kits for outdrives including the bar anodes for 290dp-e and others. Reasonably priced too.
