Hi all, looking forward to cruising the South West Coast this summer. I'm sure this has been asked before but newbie here. We love anchoring up , so looking for a good guide or recommendations from you lovely people out there. Coming across from Jersey. Looking to swim, fish and cycle oh and taste some real ale.

Cawsand Bay to the west of Plymouth Sound is easy and well protected from south westerlies. It’s also a short tender hop to the beach/pub etc. Dandy Hole on the River Lynher is beautiful and always gets great reviews. Both are within easy reach of the River Yealm, which has a small anchorage at its entrance but is more beautiful the further up you go. There a couple of pontoons and three good pubs.

That's a big ask. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of potential anchorages in the South-West.

Perhaps it'd be worth splashing out on a pilot guide?
Yes I agree, but we have to get our heads over this side of the world now. Any published guides on anchorages in the south west please.

Hard to beat the Helford river, unless E winds forecast. Lovely spot, 2 great pubs. And if wind is from the E, then lots of choices in Fal.
As has already been said, dozens of great places to anchor. Further N, there’s Babbacombe, with the Carey Arms just a stones throw away.

Purely on anchorages this is the best, bar none:

Start Point to Land's End (Chapter 4) (South England Pilot): Amazon.co.uk: Brandon, Robin: 9780852880678: Books

That is a silly price but if it was £30 I would recommend it and they sometimes come up, now and again, for a few quid. It has sketch charts of over 100 anchorages between Start and Lands End. Obviously hopelessly out of date in many respects but is an excellent guide if used with care.

A number of useful anchorages are also in this one, which is handy for your side of the Channel as well:

Endean, Kenneth F Channel Havens: Secret Inlets & Secluded Anchorages of the Channel

.

I suggest 'West Country Cruising Companion' by Mark Fishwick (with the caveat that it's now on its 9th edition - Dec. 2020 - and I only know it from my much thumbed 1995 3rd edition!).

West Country Cruising Companion

I have a 2001 version and was thinking there must be an upto date pilot book out there, preferably without spending £90, is this still a reasonable bet.

userspice site looks interesting.
