Which charts are best value for money, Admiralty or Imray, any suggestions please.

Charts are very personal things it seems from previous posts on this subject, but we do the S Brittany run every year from Poole and prefer the Imray ones. They have very good detail charts of most of the usual harbours, enough to replace the need for expensive (UK version) pilots IMO. The Imray chart numbering system too is helpfully logical with sequential numbers for adjacent charts. In addition to these though we have the Admiralty large scale chart of the Morbihan and the French large scale SHOM chart of Isles De Glenan (easily found in French chandlers).

We do also use the excellent French Pilotes Cotiers pilot books which carry a lot more information about anchorages, and other information, than the British versions, as well as being about half the price! Also useful if you like anchoring as we do, is 'Secret Anchorages of Brittany' by Peter Cumberledge, though I suspect the info contained started from Pilotes Cotiers, nice pics though and in colour.

Matter of what you are happy with, the UKHO get the info from SHOM in any case, I like the SHOM format so I use SHOM. IMHO Imray do not give enough detail and when I last looked not all rocks were indicated. Its cheaper to buy SHOM when in France

Is sailing amongst rocks or old boilers off the Needles a Barracuda speciality? Just joking /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I think it might depend on the scale of chart you are using, we use C-Map electronic too which can be traced back to the UKHO chart used, rocks which show on the very large scale chart do not appear always on the smaller scale versions as you zoom out. Too much detail can cause clutter sometimes and make a straightforward channel appear very daunting, Little Russel and Chenal Du Four being examples of that on all charts IMHO, though I can see why you would want the detail retained. A second chart printed maybe on the reverse with only anything shallower than say 3mts at LAT for yottie use would make a lot of channels seem much wider!

May I also commend the SHOM tidal atlas series. Loads of detail and useful enlargements of key areas e.g. Raz, Chenal de Four and Quiberon Bay areas.

Buy the SHOM charts

over there - best value for money, larger scale and more accurate than the Admiralty, besides being on waterproof paper.
The tide tables are also better suited to small boat passage-making, being more detailed and infinitely more accurate.
