Hi,

I have a couple of broken cabin sole boards and need some replacement material. The stuff I already have fitted is the old fashioned dark (mahogany ?) with black lines and I am looking for some that will match. In real life it looks a little darker and redder than that shown in the pic below but I don't suppose I will have that much choice in colour.

I am not thinking of ripping the old (good) stuff out to replace with "holly" and "teak" chipboard based sole board material.

I need around a 1/4 sheet but could probably get away with less if someone has any lying around from an old boat ?

I have checked a fairly extensive collection of web links I had bookmarked so don't really need a generic list of ply suppliers, specific places that actually sell dark/black sole board materials are much preferred. I did have a link bookmarked but can't find it now, sigh.

Many thanks,

Boo2

If you have access to a table saw it shouldn't be too difficult to make your own out of a 'normal' piece of marine ply and a cartridge of black sealant. The one in the link seems to be just that, an imitation of the real thing.

This is how the 'real thing' is (or used to be) constructed ... although I shudder to think what it would cost me at today's rates:

And without a table saw it could probably still be done with a bit more faffing about, a home-made jig, and either a router or a handheld circular saw. With the handheld saw you're limited to fairly narrow lines, but that would probably match what's shown in the picture.

I would make the jig engage with an earlier cut for consistent spacing, but it would still need to then be clamped in place as the cuts wouldn't be deep enough to hold it.

I could do with some to. If you find a supplier we maybe could share a full sheet if that's the only way to get hold of it.

Price = ouch!
I think that may have been the link I couldn't find, thanks very much.

Price, you say, is very firmly in ouch territory but I may just have to bite the bullet. I have someone coming round to do some work on the boat who has skills in that area so I will ask his advice. He may be able to source a small amount from stuff he has laying around. Otherwise it's break out the card time...

That looks rather fine but I don't have the skills or the money for the wood...

Again, my skills (lack of) determine that I'm pretty firmly in the buy it or forget it camp here, but thanks to you both for your suggestions,

Robbin timber Bristol , it's on the web

Thanks, did check Robbins but I must have missed it. Don't know how that happened, my eyes must have been repelled by the price : £484.28 for an 8' x 4' sheet in 12mm !:eek:

Does have the "advantage" of making Kayospruce look almost affordable :)
