Source for electric diesel pump

G'day,

I am having a spot of bother with a diesel leak on the genny & I suspect that the problem is that the electric pump that is fitted is capable of 120 litres an hour & the max requirement is about 1.5 litres. Can anyone suggest a likely source for a low flow [?] pump with a capacity of a few litres per hour?

Thank you,

John G

I think the problem, if indeed due to an inappropriate electric pump at all, is much more likely to be due to output pressure than volume capacity. They just maintain a constant pressure at the output, irrespective of max flow rate, so I don't see how max flow rate can influence propensity to leak

My Mastervolt 3.5kW diesel generator uses a Facet Cube pump, of which there are a bewildering array of models: http://www.facet-purolator.com/cube-fuel-pumps.php. The model fitted is the 40106 which can provide ~120 litres per hour at full speed but is quite ok for the tiny generator and I've had no issues at all with it (the CAV filter is another matter...)

ASAP Supplies stock them and are very helpful by email or phone.

Thank you for your helpful reply. In fact, I think that that pump is similar to the one I bought from ASAP & fitted to the genny. The reason I thought of the pump was that, after fitting a new pipe & jubilee clips, I still have a leak which appears to be [cannot check when running] from the area close to the solenoid. I have wired the pump in parallel with solenoid & suspected that either the pump was pushing fuel before the solenoid was open [seems weak, even to me] or that the bypass pipe to the return was unable to carry the 100+ litres & that the fuel was being forced out pass the connection at the injection pump.

I appreciate your helpful reply - thanks.

When I needed a low capacity, low pressure electric pump for diesel, I went to a car breaker who sold me something suitable for a tenner.

It's a simple diaphragm pump that maintains a more-or-less constant low pressure to feed the injector pump. When I get the necessary round tooit to change my fuel tank, the new one will be below the level of the filter, so the pump will go in the supply line.

Ditto for supplying my drip feed diesel heater .
. A Lucas/Cav 12v diaphragm unit, they are available in a bewildering variety of spec, try a online motor factor such as for old MG cars...
. Usually ( as now f'instance) available new on eBay, to get the ball rolling...

A Nissan X-Trail T30 (from about 2002 - 2007) has a split fuel tank so it has a little transfer pump which just sucks the diesel out of the half with the filler neck and dumps it into the half which feeds the engine. You might get one from a scrapper. Worth searching for "diesel transfer pump" if you haven't done so already. I know a few X-Trail owners who have replaced this pump with a generic one and it seems to work fine.

Thank you all very much for your help. As I have a similar setup to jdc it looks as though my usual incompetence is the problem.
